Monthly Department Inspection

Housekeeping

  • Floors clean and dry, corners free of clutter, and tops of cabinets not used for storage?

  • Tools clean and stored properly?

  • Is trash being emptied and not overflowing?

  • Aisleways clear and free from obstruction?

  • Work carts and Supply Cabinets cleaned and organized?

  • No open food or drinks in the area?

  • Are outside areas around the department clean and organized?

  • Employees are not using cell phones or headphones on production floor?

Emergency Action Plan

  • Is spill kit available and in the correct place?

  • Are exits properly marked and free of obstruction?

  • Are emergency exits lights in working order? (look for red light)

  • Is emergency equipment (alarm, pull boxes, eyewashes, showers, etc.) accessible and not blocked?

  • Is eye wash station covered, clean and overflow bucket empty?

Walking Working Surfaces

  • Are floor openings guarded by a cover, a guardrail or equivalent on all sides?

  • Are materials or equipment stored in such a way that sharp projections will not interfere with the walkways?

  • Are spotters and headphones being used when backing up boats or moving molds/dollies the operator can't see around?

  • Are steps clear of tools or materials?

  • Are employees facing the ladder when ascending and descending ladder?

  • Are trip hazards present? (cords, parts in aisleways, etc

  • Are standard guardrails provided wherever aisle or walkway surfaces are elevated 4 feet or more above any adjacent floor or the ground?

  • Are ladders positioned properly and in good condition?

Fire Prevention

  • Are gun houses and portable spray units in clean and free of debris?

  • Are Hot Boxes overflowing or contain combustible items?

  • All fire extinguishers marked and accessible?

  • Is cardboard, supplies or combustibles stored in Flammable cabinet?

  • Dust accumlation is less than 1/32 inch (thickness of a dime) and cleaned daily to prevent accumulation?

  • Has dust collection systems been emptied or dust swept out?

  • Are all flammable liquid barrels grounded?

  • Trash dumpster do not contain any "HOT" materials?

  • Combustible materials are being stored away from where MEKP is present?

  • Are employees smoking in designated smoking areas?

PPE

  • All employees are wearing approved safety glasses in the production area?

  • Cut resistant glove is worn on opposite hand when using a razor knife/blade?

  • Are chemical resistant gloves being worn when handling chemicals?

  • Are goggles/face shield being worn when drilling or sanding overhead?

  • Are hard hats being used when operating crane/hoist or in scissor lift?

  • Is hearing protection being used in required areas?

  • Used razor blades are placed in razor blade container for disposal?

  • Is approved safety knives being used?

  • Are those wearing a tight fitting respirator clean shaven?

  • Are respirators stored in nonporous, sturdy, airtight containers, like a zip-sealed plastic bag or plastic container?

  • Are employees using fall protection when working at heights over 4 feet with unprotected sides or edge? OSHA 1910.28(b)(1)(i)

Electrical and Air Systems

  • Extension cords have ground prong and no frays in cord?

  • Are compressed air nozzles at the correct pressure of 30 psi or less?

  • Is there at least three (3) feet clearance in front of electrical panels/breaker boxes?

  • Are electrical panels accessible with labels to indicate there use or equipment severed?

  • Are all unused openings, including conduit knockouts in electrical enclosures and fittings closed with appropriate covers, plugs, or plates?

  • Does fans have an approved sticker and equipped with a blade guard with opening no greater than 1/2 inch?

Tools and Equipment

  • Damage to equipment, tools or property?

  • Is Jigs, Cradles, Stands, and other equipment in good working order?

  • All moving parts (belts, pulleys, gears, shafts, etc) covered with solid material or metal mesh?

  • Is the work rest on abrasive wheel adjusted to within 1/8 inch of the wheel?

  • Is the adjustable tongue on the top side of the grinder used and kept adjusted to within 1/4 inch of wheel?

  • Is powered stationary equipment securely anchored to the floor?

  • Are guards installed and being used?

  • Are all tool instructions clearly marked & legible?

Chemical Process Operations

  • Are any chemicals expired or out-of-date?

  • Are gelcoats and resins stored in areas separate from catalysts?

  • All chemicals stored & labeled properly? Containers are in good condition?

  • Is there a "boot" covering the opening of gelcoats and resins to reduce VOC's from escaping into the atmosphere?

  • Is Acetone stored in closed flammable containers?

  • No signs of leaking MEKP, resin, or other chemicals present?

Waste Management

  • Are used solvent rags being stored in closed containers?

  • Are aerosol cans disposed of in accumulation drum and not in trash cans?

  • Is cardboard, paper, or combustibles in the "Hot Box"?

  • Are empty barrels being taken to "Empty Barrel Storage" areas outside?

  • Is trash removed promptly? (cans/dumpsters not overflowing)?

  • Are idle pallets stored flat (not propped on side or leaning? Are pallets stacked 14 or less high and not taller than 6 feet?

Hoist / Lifting

  • Are the chains and pins being used when hull rotator is in a vertical or horizon position?

  • Are slings in good condition? (not frayed, cut or deteriorated)

  • Is safety latches on crane hooks in place and operational?

  • Does spreader bars or other lifting devices have a ID tag present?

  • Is hoist or lifting device being used to lift items >50lbs or greater?

  • There is no one standing under a load when hoisting material or equipment?

  • Are the controls of hoist clearly marked to indicate the direction of travel or motion? Is load rating clearly marked and visible?

Material Handling and Storage

  • Is there at least (2) feet clearance between stacked materials and overhead lights?

  • Is there at least (18) inches maintained around the fire sprinkler heads?

  • Is seatbelt being used while operating forklift?

  • Are trucks and trailer secured with wheel chocks during loading and unloading operations?

  • Are chains in place across loading dock when not loading or unloading?

  • Are shelves holding materials marked with load rating?

Hot Work/Welding

  • Is compressed gas bottles secured and equipped with "Clamshell" type valve protectors?

  • Is electrical cords and welding leads maintained in good repair: welding leads should not be repaired or spliced within 10' of electrode holder?

  • Is flashback and backflow preventers at both the torch and regulator on oxygen/fuel cutting systems present?

  • Are welding curtains and welding hood being used while welding?
