SAFETY CHECKLIST - EARLY LEARNING Rooms

Evacuation routes are prominently displayed in room or nearby.

Doorways, walkways and evacuation exits are kept clear and at least 600mm wide.

EXIT signs are in the "Running Man" format.

Fire Extinguishers/Fire Hoses are easily accessible in an emergency.

Fire Equipment has been tested within the last 6 months.

External exit doors can be opened from the inside without a key.

A Fire Blanket is available for kitchen areas.

Smoke alarms are in place.

Evacuation and Lockdown instructions displayed in room.

A First Aid kit is available and adequately stocked.

A First Aid kit sign clearly designates the location of the First Aid kit.

A mobile First Aid kit is available for outdoor emergencies.

Rooms are clean and tidy.

There is adequate lighting in the room and the air temperature is comfortable?

There is sufficient space for staff to navigate safely.

Walls and ceilings are in safe and good condition.

There are NO rugs or carpets with upturned edges that are a trip hazard

There are no items placed in a position that could fall and cause injury?

There are no sharp knives present or scissors that are not suitable for children?

Door handles are out of reach to small children .

There is adequate ventilation.

The lighting is adequate for staff and children.

A working fridge is available to store food and drinks?

There are no indoor WATER hazards

The room temperature is comfortable

Furniture is in good condition and has no sharp edges.

All furniture and fixtures meet Australian Childcare standards.

Light fittings and ceiling fans are in good working order.

Any stepladders have a max weight load of > 120 kg and meet Australian Standards.

Hanging displays are not hazardous.

All cupboard doors and drawers have a childproof lock.

All unused power points have an Outlet Protector inserted.

Electrical equipment has been tested and tagged within past 12 months.

Power boards are not overloaded and no use of double adaptors.

All areas have Residual Current Device protection.

There are no power extension cords that could be a trip hazard

Free standing shelves/cupboards are secured to a wall to ensure stability.

Electronic equipment and learning resources are stored safely.

Storage methods are used that will eliminate or minimise accidents (heavy objects stored between mid-thigh and shoulder height).

There are NO unmarked spray bottles?

Hazardous substances are stored and labelled appropriately.

Current (within 5 years) material safety data sheets are readily available for hazardous substances.

Any Sink areas are clean and in good working order with no leaks.

No signs of vermin have been identified.

No noise hazards evident.

Animal Cages or Fish Tanks are clean and in good condition.

A landline telephone is available at the Centre to call emergency services.
