Prick resulting in blood-borne diseases such as HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C and / or other diseases such as Tetanus. The risk of acquiring a disease from a needle-stick injury is very low, however it is important to that they are disposed of quickly and safely. -
Control Measures
Adopting practices that minimise the risk of people coming in contact with sharps:
Access the area prior to commencement
Do not place hands into areas / objects where you cannot see as sharps may be concealed
Use suitable PPE equipment when handling rubbish
Do not compress rubbish bags
Wear appropriate fitted gloves
Carry away from the body, keeping the sharp end of the needle facing away from you
Never place hands in areas which cannot be seen
Do not handle more than one item at a time, if there are multiple sharps, carefully separate using a stick or similar device -
