  • Although formal testing of electrical equipment is identified as good practice, regular inspection of plugs, cables and equipment casings can identify the majority of issues which may be encountered. The Health & Safety Executive has produced guidance along with a recommended frequency listing for most work items. This is available at www.hse.gov.uk

  • All items should be inspected as follows: Plugs should be checked for damage, scorch marks, frayed cables etc. Cables should be checked for breaks, cuts, tears, and any other damage. Casings of equipment should be checked for damage, scorch marks, missing covers etc. If any of these deficiencies are found, the equipment should be removed from use until it is repaired and tested by a competent person, or it should be disposed of and replaced as required.
