Safety Checks

1) Construction Phase Plan. Availability of the approved document outlining the H&S management of the project.
2) Statutory Information. Availability of the following: Insurance (Public Liablility) F10 ( if required) HSE Law Poster
3) Safety Documentation: Availability of risk assessments and/or method statements for the work activities undertaken? Do the risk assessments address the hazards observed? Are safe systems of work available for high risk tasks?
4) Training Records: Valid certificates / ID cards for industry standards (e.g CITB, GAS SAFE etc.) Valid training for jobs being undertaken, e.g. Asbestos awareness. Mandatory V minimum.
5) Site security & Signage: Availability of controlled, restricted site access with appropriate signage or other management controls in line with the Construction Phase Plan.
6) Workplace Traffic Management: Separation of workforce & vehicles Traffic management. Pedestrian access/walkways. Barriers, signage, etc. Local parking arrangements.
7) Work Environment: Safe access/egress Availability of safe entry and exit points to site from free hazards and obstructions. Hazard and safety signage on entrances clearly visible. Good housekeeping
8) Welfare Arrangements: Access to washrooms and rest facilities, clean, sanitary and tidy. Appropriate to the size and nature and number of operatives working on the project Ref: construction phase plan.
9) Fire Safety Arrangements: Appropriate site and premises fire safety arrangements. Ref. Construction phase plan where appropriate.
10) First Aid Arrangements: First aid kits assessable and in date Eye wash easily available and in date (where provided)
11) PPE Suitability & Use: Availability of PPE signage/instructions Is PPE being used correctly. Maintained in good condition.
12) Manual Handling Are safe lifting techniques being employed? Is handling equipment available for heavy items and loads?
13) Tools & Plant: Valid inspection & maintenance certification and tags. Step ladders & ladders tagged and in date. Scaffolds erected with valid inspection tags. Handover certificate Electrical equipment tested, tagged and in date. Plant and equipment maintained and good condition. Plant machinery guarding in place. Plant cannot be operated/accessed when unattended. Working at height access equipment maintained and inspected, tagged and in date. e.g mobile elevated work platforms. Lifting equipment maintained, inspected, tagged and in date.
14) Work at Height: Is there any working at height? Is there a risk assessment in place for the work at height? Are appropriate control measures in place for the works at height?
15) Excavations: Is there a SSOW/RA for the excavation works? Is there an excavation permit for the works? Is there a buried services plans available? Is there CAT & GENNY detection equipment available to survey for buried services?
16) Environmental Controls/Waste Management: Is waste being generated on site? Is waste disposed of adequately and correctly? Waste transfer notes available? Spill kits accessible (where the likelihood of a spill may occur)? Are there any other environmental issues such as noise or dust and are there adequate controls in place?
17) Asbestos Management Survey: Is there a management survey available to inform operatives of asbestos locations not to disturb? Has the management survey information been provided to the operatives for the works being undertaken?
18) Asbestos R&D Survey: Is there a Refurbishment & Demolition survey available where operatives are undertaking intrusive refurbishment or demolition works? Has the R&D survey information been provided to operatives for the works being undertaken?
