Fire safety

  • Are fire exits clearly marked and unobstructed?

  • Is cardboard stored safely, ensuring it does not pose a fire hazard or obstruct exits?

  • Are fire extinguishers readily accessible and regularly serviced?

  • Are all staff trained in fire safety procedures and have signed the in-store notice?

  • Is there a designated fire assembly point indicated by an in-store poster?

  • If freestanding electrical heaters are used in-store, are they positioned away from flammable materials?

  • Do all plug-in electrical devices (computers, heaters, kitchen appliances, etc) have intact plugs and cables with no visible damage or fraying?

  • Are all electrical fixtures (plug sockets, light switches, light fixtures etc) intact with no signs of damage?

Structural safety

  • Are all fixtures structurally sound and regularly inspected for stability?

  • Do the fixtures pose any risk of collapsing or causing injury?

General Health & Safety

  • Are aisles and entryways kept clear of obstructions, including cartons/shoe boxes/rubbish bags/personal belongings?

  • Is there sufficient lighting throughout the store (including emergency lighting, if present)?

  • Is there a clear protocol for reporting and addressing safety hazards?

  • Does the H&S folder contain the required set of documents (as listed at the front of the folder)?

  • Are records maintained for staff training sessions related to Health & Safety and Fire procedures?

  • Is there a log of monthly safety inspections and maintenance of equipment (ladders)?

  • Is there evidence of PAT (portable electrical appliance testing) having been carried out within the past 3 years? (i.e. inspection stickers on appliances and/or a report in the H&S folder)

  • Is there a system in place for employees easily to report safety hazards or concerns?

  • Is there a plan in place to assist customers and employees during emergency situations?
