Certain safety problems are common in a hot environment. Heat on the job can cause dizziness, discomfort and the fogging of safety glasses, all of which can lead to accidents.
Recognizing Heat Illness

Symptoms of heat exhaustion include headaches, dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, muscle cramps, weakness, moist skin, mood changes such as irritability or confusion, upset stomach and vomiting. Heat stroke is an immediate threat to life.
- Get out of the heat quickly and into a cool place, or at least shade.
- Lie down and elevate your legs to get blood flowing to your heart.
- Take off any tight or extra clothing.
- Apply cool towels to your skin or take a cool bath. ...
- Drink fluids, such as water or a sports drink.
- Rapid cooling with ice packs or cold water You may sweat a lot, but some may have hot, dry skin and no sweating. Either way, it’s an extreme emergency. Call 999 immediately and get first aid assistance.
Preventing Injuries from Hot Weather

- Drink plenty of cold drinks, preferably water or flavoured water
- Take cool baths or showers
- Wear light coloured, loose clothing
- Sprinkle water over skin or clothes
- Avoid the sun between 11am and 3pm and wear sun tan lotion with a SPF of at least 15
- Avoid excess caffeine and alcohol
- Avoid extreme exercise
This will also prevent dehydration and help your body keep itself cool.
