Weekly workshop Safety Checklist

  • Is the floor space free of debris and objects

  • Are warning signs clearly visible

  • Are the personal Protective Equipment requirements for the workshop clearly displayed?

  • Are the PPE requirements followed?

  • Are lighting levels satisfactory for operators to utilise equipment safely?

  • Is the plant and equipment located in an appropriate location within the workshop?

  • Is there a preventative maintenance program in place for plant and equipment in the workshop?

  • Are there records of maintenance to plant and equipment?

  • Are there any sources of excessive noise in the immediate work area or from an external source?

  • Are people appropriately trained in plant and equipment?

  • Are records of training held for appropriately trained people?

  • Has the latest Toolbox Talk been delivered to all workshop staff?

Vehicle Inspection Pit

  • Is the red and white barrier around the vehicle pit?

  • If the roller doors are open, is the barrier across the doors?

  • Are bump caps worn in the vehicle inspection pit?

Emergency Response

  • Are all access points clear of obstructions?

  • Is emergency exit signage adequate and functioning correctly?

  • Are appropriate fire extinguishers visible and clear of obstructions?

  • Have fire extinguishers/equipment been serviced in last 6 months?

  • Is Emergency Evacuation procedure clearly displayed?

  • Have designated fire wardens been identified?

Chemical Safety

  • Is there a hazardous Substance register for the workshop?

  • Is the MSDS or other safety information available for all chemicals?

  • Are chemicals labelled appropriately?

  • Are chemicals stored correctly (i.e only with other compatible chemicals)?

  • Is all shelving compatible with chemicals stored?

  • Is there not more than one flammable liquid cabinet per 250m2 of floor space?

  • Is there security restricted access to store areas?

  • Is there appropriate secondary containment to prevent spread of major spills?

  • Is personal protective equipment available for use?

  • Are spill cleanup kits available where needed?

  • Are there approved methods of disposal for all chemicals in the workshop?

  • Are staff and apprentices aware of procedures in place for use of chemicals in the workshop?

  • Are gas cylinders in the store segregated by dangerous goods class, with correct separation distances?

  • Are all gas cylinders securely chained and the valves safe?

  • Are specialised trolleys available for moving gas cylinders?

  • Are cylinders at least 3m away from potential ignition sources?

  • Are gas cylinders stored appropriately within the workshop?

Welding Safety

  • Are staff appropriately trained in performing welding tasks?

  • Are apprentices appropriately suppervised by a competent person when welding?

  • Are welding operators provided with the appropriate PPE for the task?

  • Is there adequate ventilation for welding tasks?

  • Are there appropriate warning signs in welding areas?

  • Are welding screens used when performing welding tasks?

General Safety

  • Are electrical appliances correctly tagged?

  • Are all LOLER certificates up to date?

  • Are Pest Control records up to date?

  • Are floors and passageways clear of electrical leads?

  • Are rackings safe, secure, and tidy? No exceedence of 200kg Safe Working Load

  • Are the ladder scafftag's up to date?

  • Are the ladders in good working order? Any defects to be reported to Workshop Manager

  • Has the weekly fire alarm test been completed?
