A Layered Process Audit (LPA) is necessary to help manufacturers and the service providers to take control of the processes related to product creation. This is a necessary part as it ensures that the processes are up to the standards set by the company and international standards. It also aims to help the organisation reduce the mistakes done during the process to prevent more defects. The process also aims to improve both work quality and the bottom line of the organisation.

The Layered Process Audit (LPA) necessarily includes looking at the process of food production. Generally, there are three layers for the LPA.The first layer includes the supervisors and the team leads that should conduct the audits daily. The second layer includes the middle management who should conduct audits once or twice weekly. Finally, the third layer includes plant managers who should conduct audits monthly.

The LPA, as a process, reduces the errors done during the process of food processing and creation. It shows itself in many of the costs that it aims to reduce. The following are the costs reduced by the LPA: Direct material costs - the costs of the raw materials that are used in the production are checked against the raw materials used in the production but eventually thrown away. The LPA aims to reduce these costs by making sure that the proper use of the direct material forms part of the process. Maintenance error costs - errors in the maintenance of the equipment increase production issues and the LPA ensures that the maintenance error costs are reduced. Rework costs - rework costs or costs related to the work that must get re-done signify higher costs than the normal operations. LPA ensures that the rework costs are reduced. Warranty costs - the costs and the similar reserves used to pay for the defects that are identified after the delivery of the products are also reduced by the LPA. Inspection costs - inspection costs related to the total costs that the organization have to pay when they are audited are also reduced when proper LPA is conducted.
