Checks

  • The following must be checked prior to anyone using the tower

  • Is a copy of the manufacturers instruction manual available to help people build or check the tower?

  • Has a risk assessment be written and safety briefing being carried out on the safe use of the tower for all users?

  • Is the environment and weather conditions safe so that it doesn't put people at risk?

  • If necessary, has the work area been cordoned off?

  • Are all the correct components in good working order?

  • Has the tower been built correctly with the right number of components?

  • Are the castors or base plates in contact with the ground and bearing their share of the weight of the tower and that all four breaks are applied?

  • Are the adjustable legs only being used to level the tower and not for gaining height?

  • Is the tower level in all planes?

  • Is the tower built on firm and stable ground?

  • Is the minimum width to height ratio correct for the tower correct?

  • For scaffolds over 2 m high, ensure that the height of the top working platform is no more than three times the minimum base dimension
    For scaffolds under 2 m high, ensure that the height of the top working platform is no more than two times the minimum base dimension

  • Are stabilisers required and are they the right size for the height of the tower and correctly fitted?

  • Check that the feet are fully in contact with the ground, and wing nuts are tight?

  • Check that the foot of the stabilisers are positioned to form a square?

  • Is the bracing pattern used, in accordance with the manufactures instructions?

  • Check that the hooks on the braces are fully engaged?

  • Check that all the handrails and mid guards are fitted in the correct positions?

  • Check that the frames are fully engaged?

  • Check that all platforms are in the correct position on the tower?

  • Check that the trap door opens to the outboard side of the tower?

  • Is the working platform at least 600mm wide?

  • Check that, if the tower is single width, that all platforms have trap doors?

  • If wind locks are fitted to the platform, check that they are engaged?

  • Are toe boards fitted to the working platform when gear is stowed?

  • If the tower has been tied in, check that the method is adequate and at the correct intervals in accordance with the manufactures instruction manual?

  • Is the safe working load marked on the tower and not exceeded?

  • Is the Mobile Tower Scaffold at least four meters away from any overhead power lines?

  • If the tower is to be left incomplete has a sign been attached that warns it’s unsafe?
