Field Review

8.0 HAULING EQUIPMENT -- SECTION 409.3(d) Hauling equipment clean and in good working condition.

  • Mixtures kept free of foreign substances.

  • Adequate covers of sufficient size and quality to protect the entire load under all conditions.

  • Mixture delivered free from lumps of chilled material.

  • Properly insulated when the air temperature is below l0oC (50oF) and from October 1 to April 30.

  • Break load of material prior to opening of tailgates

  • Sufficient quantity of vehicles to maintain a continous paving operation

9.0 BITUMINOUS PAVERS -- SECTION 409.3(e) Equipment capable of placing and finishing a uniform mixture to the width and depth indicated.

  • Power-propelled with activated screeds or strike-off assemblies and automatic screed controls.

  • Equipped with receiving hoppers of sufficient capacity.

  • Equipped with adequate distribution systems.

  • Capable of placing and finishing a uniform mixture to the width and depth indicated without tearing, shoving or gouging the mixture.

  • Paver wings emptied only when there is a minimum of 12 inches of material on the hopper conveyor.

  • Material Transfer Vehicle used to supply paver with surface course material for all mainline paving.

10.0 MIX TEMPERATURE -- SECTION 409.3(h) Temperature of mixture within specified limits.

  • Not lower than 8C (15F) below the minimum specified temperature on the bituminous supplier’s bill of lading for normal conditions.

  • Not lower than 14C (25F) below the minimum specified temperature on the bituminous supplier’s bill of lading for unforeseen delays.

  • Not higher than the maximum specified temperature on the bituminous supplier’s bill of lading.

  • Document the the mixture temperature of the first 5 loads of material placed in the Material Transfer Vehicle and periodically thereafter during placement.

11.0 SPREADING AND FINISHING -- SECTION 409.3(h) Mechanical equipment properly used to spread and strike off the mixture to the required cross-section and depth.

  • Paver distributed a uniform mixture for entire width.

  • Paver placed mixture to the required template, width and depth.

  • Paver did not tear, shove or gouge the mixture.

  • Approved materials used to clean equipment, tools, etc.

  • Exposed outer edges worked to avoid a sharp, ragged, open,or unfinished appearance and to prevent edge breakdown.

  • Curb gutters sealed evenly 300mm (12 inches) from curb with hot bituminous material of the class and type designated for the wearing course, E-6, or E-8, or two applications of AET emulsion.

  • Surface voids along curbs are completely filled and provides a watertight joint

12.0 PATTERN SEGREGATION -- SECTION 409.3(h)3 Suspected pattern segregation properly identified and evaluated.

  • Contractor notified of suspected segregation.

  • Severity of the segregated areas evaluated in accordance with PTM 751.

  • Corrective action taken if the average difference in pavement texture depth exceeds 0.61mm (0.024 in).

  • Paving operations suspended whenever pattern segregation has been determined through PTM 751.

  • Affected areas removed and replaced.

  • Test section of 180 tonne (200 tons) placed and evaluated prior to resuming normal paving.
