General things to know or ask if you don't know about ....

  • Are there any "known" problems with this apparatus? How it drives, how it pumps, missing or broken equipment....

Fluid levels

  • Fuel above 75% at shift change?

  • Fueled to 100%?

  • Oil pressure gauge ok

  • Oil level gauge ok

  • Water in tank FULL

  • Pump is primed

Physical damage/cleanliness

  • List any/all physical damage found on the apparatus. Even if you think its already been reported.

  • Cab area has been cleaned of ALL trash and unnecessary debris. (Even if it's from the group before and it's not yours)

  • Wipe down all surfaces and seats with a rag and cleaner.

  • Interior floor swept and scrubbed.

  • Apparatus inside windows cleaned and dried with no streaks. (Do the outside if they need it too.)

  • Apparatus exterior has been washed and rinsed properly regardless of the weather.

  • Wheels are washed after the rest of the truck and scrubbed as much as needed.

  • Windshield wipers are wiped clean with a dry rag. Don't use cleaners on the wipers this final wipe down.

Lights, sirens, air and electronic components.

  • Shoreline inlet plug and cover physically undamaged.

  • Shoreline plug "jumper" functions properly.

  • Shoreline Auto ejector functions properly when apparatus is started.

  • Are there any vehicle warning lights when startup? (Check engine, transmission, fluid, etc.)

  • Is a Regen needed?

  • Did you conduct a successful Regen?

  • Headlight bulbs ok

  • Highbeams ok

  • Left blinker front ok

  • Left blinker rear

  • Right blinker front ok

  • Right blinker rear ok

  • Brake lights left, right and middle ok.

  • Overhead emergency/warning lights.

  • Ensure emergency light switch is left ON when shutting down the apparatus. That way it is ready when we roll out for a call.

  • Each switch on panel above driver has been operated and verified that it functions. Properly reset after testing.

  • Front spotlight DS switch

  • Electric siren functions properly on multiple frequencies including squelch. Set on our normal settings then OFF after testing. (Emergency Lights Power needs to be on for elect siren to work)

  • Drivers side Federal-Q siren pedal activates properly.

  • Driver side Siren brake switch functions properly

  • Officers side Federal-Q siren button functions properly

  • Computer mounted and locked in properly.

  • Check for apps, pictures, programs, etc that would be useful during the shift. Install or ask to install what you need

  • Disconnect computer to use as tablet. Test that it functions properly in tablet mode.

  • Reconnect tablet to computer and base.

  • Restart computer.

  • Install program updates but NOT upgrade to Windows 11.

  • Log into computer Windows account. un & pw

  • Log into QED computer program un & pw

  • Open map in QED to verify connection and location.

  • Return to QED call info/stack page

Set drivers preferences

  • Plymovent system tested and functions properly.

  • Set drivers seat to your personal distance, height and air pressure preferences.

  • Set mirrors using power toggle.

  • Ensure you are familiar with where the air brake set/release button is and how it functions. Air brake has been released and re-engaged properly to ensure function.

  • Ensure you are familiar with how to engage PTO switch and have practiced this action today.

  • Ensure you are familiar with where emergency light switches are located so you can operate them on or off without looking up while driving especially at nighttime.

  • Do you have your street book on you?

  • Notify your company Officer to acquire one.

  • Are your pump levers set where you want them to be?

  • Do you know what state your drains are currently in?

  • Are ALL hoses and nozzles in a state that they will deploy quickly and properly?

  • Are you confident to drive this vehicle safely on crowed city streets?

  • Do you feel confident engineering the operation of this pump properly and efficiently at anytime during your shift?

  • What would you like to learn about your current position?

  • Suggest a training evolution you would like to see conducted. Simple or complex. Location ideas to conduct the drill are encouraged. (Apply this thinking to your first due district to see what's available)
