Overview: Although an excavation must be inspected at the start of every shift, only one report is needed in any seven day period unless something happens to affect its strength or stability; another report must be completed. Reference should be made to any risk assessment covering excavations.

Timings and frequency of checks: - Inspect before work at the start of every shift - Inspect after any event likely to have affected its strength or stability - Inspect after any accidental fall of rock, earth or other material

  • If so; what measures have you taken to prevent collapse?

  • If lone working is taking place? If so; stop until there is a second body on site.

  • Any matters which give rise to any health and safety risks
