Eligibility and physical health issues.
-
Does the driver hold an appropriate licence?
-
Driving licence number : -
-
The assessment cannot continue on legal grounds.
-
Can the driver read a standard vehicle registration plate at 20.5 metres
-
Assessment abandoned until driver gets corrective eyewear.
-
Does the driver report themselves to be in good health?
-
Health issues :-
-
The Smart Way and its employees are not medically trained and are not qualified to judge the fitness of anyone to drive at any time. The response recorded in this report is what the driver told the assessor/trainer. The B+E test does not require the driver to undertake a medical examination
-
Can the driver operate the vehicle without any adaptations? List adaptations here if any are required.
-
Specific adaptations required
Vehicle safety check questions (Show me/Tell me)
-
There are 15 preset vehicle safety test questions (some times refered to as the "Show me/Tell me" questions). The examiner will ask 5 questions. Failure to answer all 5 correctly will result in a test fail.
-
How many of the Vehicle Safety Questions was the driver able to perform?
-
The driver is generally strong in this area, but a little revision would be usefull.
-
This driver is weak in this area, and although we do not necessarily think that this will be a cause to fail the test, we recommend that the driver studies these questions before the test to be more confident.
-
Information for these questions can be found on our website WWW.THE-SMART-WAY.CO.UK and can be studied out side of the scope of the assessment
Reverse Exercise
-
Can the driver conduct the required reverse exercise sucessfully
-
The candidate can do this comfortably, no practice needed.
-
Further practice not specifically required.
-
The candidate can generally do this well and should be able to cope on the test.
-
Further practice : - a little practice in the per-test "warm up" should be adequate.
-
The candidate seems to understand the principles of the reverse exercise but does not seem confident of the dimensions and is currently only getting this right about half of the time.
-
Further practice : - I suggest that at least 1 two hour training session be undertaken to master this before the test.
-
The candidate is some way short of mastering this exercise, and is getting it correct less on less than half of the occasions attempted.
-
Further practice : - I suggest that at this driver may need as much as 2 two hour sessions to master this.
-
The candidate is not understanding this manoeuvre and at this point in time can not do it.
-
Further practice : - Considerable further practice is required.
-
The reverse exercise is a Pass/Fail element of this test and the test should only be attempted when the candidate is able to do this well.
Driving ability
-
Acceleration sense
-
The driver generally accelerated smoothly and progressively, demonstrating good awareness and planning for the vehicle and the conditions.
-
The driver occasionally accelerates a little harshly. Bear in mind that in the event of a sudden problem on the road ahead, harsh acceleration may make it harder to respond safely. This was discussed with the driver.
-
The driver regularly drives in a style where acceleration is harsh. This is uneconomic and bad for the vehicle and load. It is also potentially dangerous when driving with a full load. It's is recommended that the driver takes further general training before progressing to the B+E test.
-
Braking sense
-
The driver generally planned ahead well and avoided needing to brake harshly or suddenly.
-
The driver occasionally demonstrated some noticeably strong braking. Planning further ahead and lifting off the accelerator to make use of deceleration is required. Harsh braking is poor planning and it could easily lead to problems including jack-knifing the rig when fully laden. This is likely to be seen as cause
-
The driver regularly demonstrated poor planning and braking. This needs to be rectified, and some general driver improvement training should be considered before progressing to the B+E test.
-
Steering ability
-
The driver generally steers well, making adequate allowance for the trailer.
-
Safe steering is critical when towing, particularly taking into account the extra length of the trailer. This was discussed with the driver and issues seem to have been addressed.
-
The driver demonstrated unsatisfactory steering control, which could be considered dangerous. It is recommended that further training in this area be taken.
-
Use of mirrors
-
The driver generally uses the mirrors well and remains aware of everything around him/her.
-
Use of the mirrors is paramount when driving, particularly when towing.
-
All available mirrors must be checked regularly to ensure safety, particularly before any change of course or speed (i.e. steering or slowing). In addition when towing regular use of the mirrors ensures stability of the trailer and ensures that the trailer is following the towing vehicle correctly.
-
Road Positioning
-
The driver demonstrated good positioning, getting into the correct lane in good time.
-
The driver needs to consider the effect of the trailer when making position choices.
-
The driver demonstrated a number of poor positioning choices. It is recommended that further training is taken in this area.
-
Use of the rules of the road?
-
The driver demonstrated a good understanding of the rules of the road and understanding of the Highway Code.
-
Although not dangerous, this driver could benefit from retreading the Highway Code.
-
The driver demonstrated an unacceptable grasp of the application of the Highway Code.
-
Judgement at junctions and meeting situations
-
The driver generally demonstrated good judgement in dealing with other traffic.
-
The driver needs to be mindful of the need to be safe at all times when dealing with other traffic. Some further coaching in this area would be of benefit.
-
It is recommended that this driver undertakes a general driver improvement course before attempting the B+ E test.
Hitch and Unhitch exercise
-
Did the driver demonstrate an understanding of the importance of Trailer Handbrake "On First/Off Last"?
-
Did the driver safely unhitch and then re-hitch the trailer?
-
Does the driver understand the importance of double checking that the trailer is correctly coupled to the tow ball
-
Does the driver understand the importance of the walk round check?

Based on the driving seen in the assessment today, does the assesor believe that the candidate can pass a B+E test?
-
Further attention MUST be given to the areas highlighted in red in the report above.
-
This review has been carried out based on the performance seen on the day. I believe it to be a fair and honest assessment of the driver's performance.
