CHILD SAFETY - GROUNDS INSPECTION

1. ISSUE: The pathway on the eastern side of the PREP Building is a potential child safety hazard. Young students run the risk of being injured, falling from rocks. There are a few gaps in the hedges that allow students to access. Over the years there have been a number of snake sightings in this area. RISK: Trips/Falls, Snake Bites. SOLUTION: Complete hedging along the pathway to restrict access by students.

2. ISSUE: The alternative Emergency Exit from the PREP Building to C Block is narrow and may not cater for the 80 students that would use this evacuation route if the normal evacuation route from the main exit door is blocked. RISK: All students and staff unable to safely evacuate in an emergency. SOLUTION: Modify the path and single gate to a wider path and double gate.

3. ISSUE: The fence along the western side of the College, behind D block, starts off as a pool fence but then becomes a steel fence with two horizontal bars. This is an ineffective barrier to prevent young students entering the side road. RISK: Potential risk of a young student being hit by a motor vehicle or Golf Buggy. SOLUTION: Replace the existing fence with pool fencing along the remainder of the fence line.

4. ISSUE: The wheelchair access area on the corner of D Block and E Block is sometimes used by primary students to play handball. The ball often travels through the wheelchair area on to the access road. Students then run on to the access road chasing the ball. RISK: Potential risk of a young student being hit by a motor vehicle or Golf Buggy. SOLUTION: Clear hard plastic panel (or similar) to be installed.

5. ISSUE: Tiled wall along the boundary of the Primary Playground presents a hazard to Primary Students particularly when the tiles are chipped or damaged. There have been incidents where students have been injured when falling on to the hard surface and also incidents where tiles have been damaged - creating sharp edges. RISK: Cuts and lacerations. SOLUTION: Replace or cover tiled walls with a timber alternative - similar to the work completed in the Prep outdoor area.

6. ISSUE: There are a number of unlocked sheds and storage units around the Primary and Secondary school grounds that pose a potential hazard to young children. RISK: Students could hide or find themselves trapped in these confined spaces. SOLUTION: Introduce combination locks for all sheds/storage units to prevent entry by students. Same combination for all locks and Sheds/Storage areas to be checked for students prior to locking.

7. ISSUE: The area behind F Block is out of bounds to unsupervised Students but there are no physical barriers to prevent access. RISK: Potential Injury from facilities equipment and materials stored behind and under F Block. Potential snake bites. Access to creek. SOLUTION: Pool fence to be erected with a lockable double gate to allow access by Facilities staff.

8. ISSUE: The pathway behind the Learning Hub is out of bounds to unsupervised Students but there are no physical barriers to prevent access. RISK: Injury from snake bites. Access to creek. SOLUTION: Pool fence to be erected with a lockable double gate to allow access by Facilities staff and staff/students during Cross Country season.

9. ISSUE: Primary students have been spotted playing under the footbridge leading from the Primary School to the Secondary School. RISK: Cuts and lacerations from rocks. SOLUTION: Wire fence to restrict access.

10. ISSUE: There is a sizeable gap at the bottom of the fence behind the Learning Hub (next to Sustainability Garden). RISK: Small child could slip through the gap and fall from height. SOLUTION: Close gap.

11. ISSUE: The fence around the pond behind the RGC has a number of defects 1. Large gap under the gate that a small child could slip under. 2. One of the fence panels has been removed. 3. The double gate in the student sitting area is open and not locked. RISK: A small child visiting the school for sport at weekends or after school hours could easily gain access to the pond. SOLUTION: Pond fence to be repaired, gap in gate fixed and the double gate closed and padlocked.

12. ISSUE: Area between K Block and H Block was cluttered and dangerous material was left on the ground including protruding nails. RISK: Student (or staff member) could trip over items or step on the nails. SOLUTION: Area to be cleaned up by Design Tech staff and instructions posted to keep the area clean and free of trip hazards.

13. ISSUE: A BBQ is stored between G Block and H Block. BBQ includes a Gas Cylinder. RISK: BBQ is not fit for use and Gas Tank should be stored in the locked Facilities Gas Cylinder storage area. SOLUTION: Decommission BBQ (or clean up) and transfer the gas tank to the Facilities area.

14. ISSUE: Senior Students have been seen congregating between the water tank and electrical cabinets next to the G Block car park. ISSUE: Area not suitable for students with trip hazards from uneven surfaces. SOLUTION: Area to be marked Out of Bounds to students and uneven surfaces to be fixed.
