1 - Inspection Checklist

  • ‘Section 1’ of the checklist is tailored to suit the requirements of the workplace and can be used to conduct quarterly inspections of general areas e.g. classroom, office area, kitchen and canteen etc.

1.0 Structural and mechanical

  • 1.1 Equipment is free from damage, rust and corrosion, or split wood

  • 1.2 Protective coats/paint and equipment surfaces are free from damage and wear (e.g. no peeling paint)

  • 1.3 Rails, bolts and other protruding sharp objects are covered with end caps

  • 1.4 Bolts, nuts, screws and fastening pins are in place and secure

  • 1.5 Handrails and steps are free from damage and are slip resistant

2.0 Fall zone

  • 2.1 The distance from any part of the equipment to any hard surface (e.g. pathways, tree trunks or adjacent equipment is approximately 2.5 metres

3.0 Impact absorbing surfaces

  • 3.1 Impact absorbing material is underneath equipment where there is a potential fall from height is approximately 250mm

  • 3.2 Impact absorbing material is equally distributed underneath equipment

  • 3.3 Rubber/synthetic pads or tiles are in good condition and have not separated from the base layer and do not have any embedded foreign objects

  • 3.4 Loose impact absorbing material (e.g. bark or mulch) is free from sharp edges

  • 3.5 Borders around the impact absorbing surfaces are in good condition

4.0 Sand pits

  • 4.1 Sandpits are clean and free from foreign objects and animal waste

  • 4.2 Sandpit borders are in good condition, free from splinters, exposed nails, and pins

5.0 Shade sails

  • 5.1 Shade sail is free from rips, holes, or tears

  • 5.2 Structural components are free from rust, damage, and corrosion

6.0 Basketball/netball rings and backboards

  • 6.1 The basketball/netball pole is in good condition and free from damage, rust, and corrosion

  • 6.2 The safety marking signage “WARNING: SWINGING ON THE BACKBOARD MAY CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH” is in place, legible and in good condition
