General Housekeeping

  • NFPA 1 19.1.2 No person owning or having control of any property shall allow any combustible material to accumulate in any area or in any manner that creates a fire hazard to life or property.

  • NFPA 1 19.1.3 Combustible waste or refuse shall be properly stored or disposed of to prevent unsafe conditions.

  • NFPA 1 19.2.1.6 Approved metal receptacles with self-closing covers shall be provided for the storage or disposal of oil-soaked waste or cloths.

NFPA 1 10.19* Combustible Materials.

  • NFPA 1 10.19.1 Storage of combustible materials shall be orderly.

  • NFPA 1 10.19.4 Combustible material shall not be stored in near exits.

  • NFPA 1 10.19.5.1 Combustible material shall not be stored in boiler rooms, mechanical rooms, or electrical equipment rooms.

NFPA 1 11.1 Electrical Fire Safety.

  • NFPA 1 11.1.5 Extension cords shall not be used as a substitute for permanent wiring.

  • NFPA 1 11.1.5.3.1 Extension cords shall be plugged directly into an approved receptacle, power tap, or multiplug adapter and shall, except for approved multiplug extension cords, serve only one portable appliance.

  • NFPA 1 11.1.5.3.5 Extension cords and flexible cords shall not be affixed to structures; extend through walls, ceilings, or floors, or under doors or floor coverings; or be subject to environmental or physical damage.

NFPA 1 13.6 Portable Extinguishers.

  • NFPA 1 13.6.3.3 Fire extinguishers shall be conspicuously located where they will be readily accessible and immediately available in the event of fire. Preferably, they shall be located along normal paths of travel, including exits from areas. [NFPA 10:1.5.3]

  • NFPA 1 13.6.3.10 Fire extinguishers having a gross weight not exceeding 40 lb (18.14 kg) shall be installed so that the top of the fire extinguisher is not more than 5 ft (1.53 m) above the floor. [NFPA 10:1.5.10]

  • NFPA 1 13.6.6.8.1.2* Maintenance, servicing, and recharging shall be performed by trained persons having available the appropriate servicing manual(s), the proper types of tools, recharge materials, lubricants, and manufacturer's recommended replacement parts or parts specifically listed for use in the fire extinguisher. NFPA 1 14.4 Means of Egress

  • NFPA 1 14.4.1* Means of egress shall be continuously maintained free of all obstructions or impediments to full instant use in the case of fire or other emergency. [NFPA 101:7.1.10.1]

  • NFPA 1 14.5.2.1 Doors shall be arranged to be opened readily from the egress side whenever the building is occupied. [101:7.2.1.5.1]

  • NFPA 1 14.5.2.2 Locks, if provided, shall not require the use of a key, a tool, or special knowledge or effort for operation from the egress side. [NFPA 101:7.2.1.5.2]

NFPA 1 14.14 Marking of Means of Egress.

  • NFPA 1 14.14.1.2* Exits. Exits, other than main exterior exit doors that obviously and clearly are identifiable as exits, shall be marked by an approved sign that is readily visible from any direction of exit access. [NFPA 101:7.10.1.2]

  • NFPA 1 14.14.5.1* General. Every sign required by 14.14.1.2, 14.14.1.5, or 14.14.6.5.1, other than where operations or processes require low lighting levels, shall be suitably illuminated by a reliable light source. Externally and internally illuminated signs shall be legible in both the normal and emergency lighting mode. [NFPA 101:7.10.5.1]
