Electrical Safety

  • No power cords across walkways?

  • Safety switches installed (RFCDs installed and labeled)?

  • General Power Outlets (GPOs) in good order? Not cracked , broken plugs/switches?

  • No double adapters in use on GPOs or piggybacked power boards?

  • Electrical equipment (photocopiers, faxes, printers and shared white goods) in good working order?

  • Portable electrical equipment tested, tagged and in good condition?

Kitchen and Meal Areas

  • Is there a kitchen or meal area?

  • Cupboards, bench tops, sinks tidy and clean?

  • Rubbish bins regularly emptied and cleaned?

  • Safety Data Sheets available for all chemicals and are current? Must not be more than five years old.

  • Are any gas cylinders appropriately secured? Eg chained or in cages?

  • Are staff trained in the use of hazardous substances?

  • Is the correct PPE available as recommended on the safety data sheet(s)?

  • Are eyewash stations and safety showers easily accessible and in good working order?

  • Are eyewash stations plumbed to allow for flushing of eyes for 20 minutes?


  • Are there ladders stored and used in this area?

  • Are ladders in good condition?

  • Are all ladders industrial strength? (Non-household rated, check label)

  • For extension ladders are ropes, pulleys and treads in good state of repair?

  • If used for electrical work are they non-conductive? ( Wood or fibreglass)

Workshops and Machinery

  • Are they in a clean and tidy state? Tools not in use put away?

  • Is there adequate space between the machines to allow for their safe operation?

  • Are flashback arresters installed on all oxygen and acetylene welding / cutting equipment?
