Fire and Emergency

  • Is the evacuation sweep plan and assembly points displayed?

  • Are exit doors free from obstruction, undamaged and easily opened from the inside?

  • Is there adequate directional signage to point persons to an exit door?

  • Are fire extinguishers in their locations, unobstructed and marked for the type of fire?

  • Are fire call points undamaged and free from obstruction?

Work area

  • Are gangways and pathways clearly marked?

  • Are gangways and pathways free from obstruction?

  • Is there access to all places where people have to work?

  • Are floor surfaces to an acceptable standard, free from damage, pot holes, excessive oil?

  • Are floor coverings such as anti slip or fatigue matting in good condition so not to present a slip / trip hazard?

  • Is housekeeping to a good standard, clear of rubbish, tools, parts not left on the floor?

  • Are materials stored in designated areas, racks, bins or pallets?

  • Are materials stored safely so not to fall, obstruct or create damage?

  • Are barriers and railings secure and free from structural damage?

  • Are safety signs suitable, in place, in good condition and clearly visible?

  • Are signs sufficient for hazards and procedures required such as cell or confined space entry requirements?

  • Are EHS notice boards in place and up to date?

  • Is furniture in good condition?

  • Are stairs, access ladders and gantries free from damage, clean and free from obstructions?

  • Are railings in place to prevent persons falling where needed, are they in good condition, a minimum of 950mm high and free from structural damage?

Work equipment

  • Have ladders been inspected (look for evidence of a reference number or ladder tag)

  • Are ladder rungs, feet, side rails and locks in good condition and ladders are stored correctly?

  • Are ladders to class 1 industrial or EN131 commercial standard?

  • Are ladders used for electrical work non conductive (wood or fibre glass)?

  • Are emergency stops in good condition, stop the machine and in easy reach for the operator?

  • Are machine guards ( fixed, interlocked, photoelectric, trip) present and in good condition?

  • Have machine safety checks been completed? (Light guard, push guards, pre start checks)

  • Are jigs, stillages, crates, racking and related equipment in good condition, free from excessive structural damage? ( no dents over 6mm on racking)

  • Are safe working limits displayed on any lifting or carrying equipment?

  • Are hand operated pump trucks in good condition, operating correctly without leaks, wheels or forks bent out of shape?

  • Are hand tools in good condition, not cracked, warped or excessively worn?

  • Are hand power tools in good condition, have the correct speed rated consumable , consumable, cables or pipes free from leaks or damage?

  • Are extraction systems in good working order and statutory inspected within the last 14 months ?

  • Are screens, hoods and panels in good condition so as to protect pedestrians?

Electrical

  • Are electrical cabinets and control panels closed and not damaged?

  • Are all disconnected cables correctly made safe or identified as non live?

  • RCD or other safety devices been installed for sockets over 110V and are in good condition?

  • There are no broken or overloaded plugs, sockets or switches?

  • Power leads have been routed to avoid walkways, gangways, damage from wear or tension?

  • Cables have two levels of insulation including KS Connectors ? There are no exposed wires or damaged insulation.

  • Main power cables in to machines are hard or industrially wired?

  • Electrical equipment is protected from water ingress or potential spills and leaks?

  • Main power shut off switches are clearly identified?

  • Are portable appliances PAT tested in line with policy?

Substances

  • Are hazardous substances identified and stored correctly in a flammable cupboard, well ventilated area and protected from potential damage?

  • Are safety data sheets available for all substances used in the area?

  • Are gas bottles secured by chain, trolley or cage?

  • Are flammable gases stored to prevent collision damage, separate to inert gases and clearly identified as full or empty?

  • Is dust and fume controlled, captured and kept to a minimum?

  • Are eye wash stations in place where chemicals are used or batteries are charged? Are they clean and in date?

Environment

  • Are all liquids identified and adequately stored to contain spills and leaks? ( drip trays, bunds to 110%)

  • Are drip trays and bunds in good condition, not leaking , do not contain debris and less than 10% full?

  • Are spillage kits in place and have the correct content?

  • Is the spill procedure on display near to the spill material for reference?

  • Are drains identified, free from contamination and a suitable distance from stored liquids?

  • Is the area free from significant spills or leaks?

  • Is the area free from compressed air leaks?

  • Are external roadways and yard surfaces in good condition, free from potholes and fractures?

  • Is external area housekeeping including waste storage areas to a satisfactory level?

  • Are waste bins suitable for the area, in good condition and not overflowing?

  • Are bins correctly labelled with the required content?

  • Do bins contain the correct content?

Facilities

  • Is the building structure in good condition, free from collision damage?

  • Are toilets and rest areas to an acceptable level of cleanliness?

  • Are areas sufficiently illuminated for the tasks undertaken?

  • Are vehicles doors free from damage and operational?
