Documentation and Competency

  • Are RAMS relevant to the site and in date?

  • Are STATS on site, available and in date?

Welfare

Excavation

  • Are there barriers in place to prevent people and vehicles falling in?

  • Are unattended open excavations covered?

  • Is there a permit to dig present?

Hand Arm Vibration

  • Are workers aware of the risks of hand arm vibration and the required action to prevent it?

  • Has exposure been reduced by the selection of suitable work methods and plant?

  • Are tools properly maintained?

  • Is this managed in the risk assessment on site?

Electricity

  • Are low voltage tools and equipment being used?

  • Are residual current devices (RCD) in use?

  • Are RCD checked daily and properly maintained?

  • Are cables and leads protected from damage?

  • Have hidden electricity cables and other services been located ( with a locator and plans ) and marked?

  • Is electricty managed within the risk assessment?

Tools and Machinery

  • Are the right tool / machinery being used for the job?

  • Are dangerous parts guarded?

  • Are tools and machinery maintained and in good repair and are all safety devices operating safely?

  • Are calibration Certificates present for required machinery?

  • Are all operatives trained and competent to use tools and machinery?

  • Are tools and machinery managed in the risk assessment?

Protecting the public

  • Is the work fenced off from the public?

  • Are roadworks barriered off and lit, and a safe alternative route provided?

  • Is a safe route provided for persons with prams, in wheelchairs and the visually impaired?

  • Is the boundary secure and undamaged?

  • Are bricks and materials safely stored?

Emergencies

  • Are emergency procedures in place?

  • Do workers know what they are?

  • Is there a way to contact emergency services from site?

  • Are there adequate escape routes in place and are they kept clear?

  • Is there adequate first aid provision?

Fire

  • Are the quantities of flammable materials, liquids and gases kept to a minimum?

  • Are they properly stored?

  • Is there an allocated smoking area?

  • Are gas cylinders, associated hoses and equipment properly maintained and in good condition?

  • Are valves on cylinders fully closed when not in use?

  • Is flammable and combustible waste removed regularly and stored in a suitable location?
