Part A – MINOR STORAGE (incl. Packaged Store) <br><br>Definition of Minor Mixed Gas Storage per table 2.1 AS 4332 – The Storage & Handling of Gases in Cylinders

KEY REQUIREMENTS per AS 4332 – Storage & Handling of Gases in Cylinders

  • Cylinders kept away from heat sources e.g. boilers, steam pipes

  • All cylinders kept at least 3m clear of combustible materials

  • Adequate ventilation in all storage areas

  • Gas cylinder stores to be outside & separated from buildings & boundaries by > 3m if any 2.3 poisonous gases or if > 500L 2.1 flammable gases or > 1,000L 2.2/5.1 oxidizing gases

  • Fire protection equipment available e.g. if: <br><1000L stored – water hose connection e.g. garden hose <br>1000-2000L – one fire hose reel or at least one 9L Dry Powder fire extinguisher

  • All cylinders stored in an upright position and secured against falling e.g., chained

  • All relief devices positioned away from barriers or other cylinders

  • Full and empty cylinders stored separately & labelled e.g. “Empty” or “Full”

  • Cylinders regularly checked for faults, leaks and stock rotated

  • All cylinder contents are clearly identified and have applicable Class 2 diamonds e.g., 2.1 Flammable Gas

  • Storage floor in good condition and non-combustible

  • Suitable cylinder trolley available to move cylinders about in an upright manner

  • Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) available, as required by MSDS

  • Smoking prohibited in gas storage area e.g. “NO SMOKING” signage posted

  • Oil and grease kept away from cylinder valves

  • No ignition sources if flammable gases present, including flame proof electrics e.g. AS 2430

  • Cylinders are stored at ground level and whenever possible outdoors

  • Training provided to persons handling and using Class 2 gases

  • Class 2 gases are separated from other dangerous goods stores by >3m and >1m from any door, window, duct or air vent in outdoor storage

  • Indoor minor stores of gases are separated from other minor gas stores or other dangerous goods by a minimum of >5m & < minor quantity indoors / 200m2

  • Class 2.1 Flam. gases segregated from Class 2.2, subsidiary risk 5.1 9e.g. oxygen) by >3m

  • Class 2.3 Toxic gases segregated from all other gases by >3m

  • Reg: 413 - Unauthorized access prevented e.g., site or departmental access controls

  • 421 - DG storage protected from impact e.g. barriers if vehicular traffic

  • 438 – MSDS’s readily accessible for all DG’s e.g. in vicinity of use

  • 442 - Register of DG’s maintained & up to date

  • COP 39.3 - Quantity of DG’s kept to minimum required e.g. Limited to one day’s supply in immediate work area

  • - Cylinders labelled e.g. comply with AS 4332

  • - Any recent incidents involving DG’s? If so, please specify
