Checklist

SAFETY CHECKS

  • No flammables are present (Consider electronic gas detector for confined spaces)

  • Area clean and free of combustible materials within a 15 m radius

  • All drains within 15 m are covered with a wet fireproof blanket

  • A fire hose run out to job site and checked for supply & pressure

  • All sparks from work more than 2 meters above ground are contained by a suitable enclosure e.g., fire resistant canvas

  • Welding machines/gas cylinders are located not within 8 meters of any drain e.g., risk of flammable vapors accumulating in drain

  • Welding machine earthed directly to equipment being welded as close to welding point as possible e.g., to avoid arching & excessive sparks

  • Power leads are not draped across pipelines or access ways.

  • Coatings stripped for a distance of not less than 150mm (to minimize catching fire)

  • Any surface coatings checked for possibility of releasing toxic vapors when heated

  • Appropriate fire extinguishers ready to use and personnel trained to use emergency equipment

  • Person assigned to fire watch during and for at least 30 minutes after hot work ceases

  • The need for any extra ventilation is assessed

  • Fire resistant shields are covering combustibles

  • Fire alarm points identified prior to commencement and all personnel understand emergency plan for site.

Hot Work Zone Set Up Checklist.<br><br>This is to be used for the establishment of permanent or long-term hot work zones. <br><br>All works conducted in this zone is exempt from completing a permit to work and hot work checklist.

AREA

  • Non-combustible, fire-resistant construction

  • Free of combustibles and flammables, including no cardboard boxes, cloths, paper or fuel. If storage required install metal cupboards

  • Designated working surfaces are non-combustible

  • Not within 8m of drains, to prevent build-up of flammable vapors.

  • Area is segregated and restricted access/ use to authorized persons. This may be the use of barriers/ welding curtains.

  • Suitable fire extinguisher/s within the zone and unobstructed.

  • No smoke detector, use heat detector instead

  • Equipment mechanical ventilation for work zone/ task location/s.<br><br>Tested to be sufficient for expected work tasks.

  • Signposted restricted access/use,

  • Allocated location for welding gases to be secured at all times.

  • Area free from becoming damp or wet.

  • no combustibles or flammables to be stored with 15m.

  • Evacuation route kept clear.

Procedures

  • Competency training and only authorized persons to conduct hot work

  • Prestart check of area daily to ensure clear of any dust, flammables, or combustibles, also check of equipment e.g., hoses for any punctures or weakness.
