12.8. Hand Tools and Portable Power Tools Checklist

  • Are tools stored on racks or shelves or in boxes when not in use? AFI 91-203 para. 12.3.1

  • Are power tools unplugged and properly stored when not in use? AFI 91-203 para. 12.3.1

  • Do workers carry tools in tool belts or other carrying devices such as shoulder bags or backpacks when climbing ladders or while working at elevated heights such as scaffolds, platforms or work stands? AFi 91-203 para. 12.3.4

  • Are workers not allowed to drop tools from elevated surfaces, or throw tools back and forth to each other? AFI 91-203 para. 12.3.4

  • Are tools inspected for defects, and defective tools immediately removed from service? AFI 91-203 para. 12.3.5

  • Are screwdrivers used only for their intended purpose and not as chisels, punches or pry bars? AFI 91-203 para. 12.4.1.1

  • Is small work requiring the use of a screwdriver secured in a vise or by other suitable means and not held by hand, under the arm or in the lap? AFI 91-203 para. 12.4.1.2

  • Do workers plan a path of retreat in the event of an unplanned or premature falling tree or limb? AFI 91-203 para. 12.6.2.5

  • Are chain saws that are not properly maintained, adjusted or properly assembled removed from service until repairs are made? AFI 91-203 para. 12.6.2.10

  • Are chain saws only operated in well ventilated areas? AFI 91-203 para. 12.6.2.15

  • Are workers well trained and familiar with the operation of the tool and the characteristics of the materials involved before being permitted to operate powder-actuated tools? AFI 91-203 para. 12.6.3.1

  • Is each tool equipped with a steel muzzle guard at least 3-1/2 inches in diameter, mounted perpendicular to the barrel and designed to confine flying fragments or particles when the tool is operated? AFI 91-203 para. 12.6.3.4

  • Are tools designed to operate only when the operator is holding the tool against a work surface with a force at least five (5) pounds greater than the total weight of the tool? AFI 91-203 para. 12.6.3.6

  • Do operators ensure that no fastener of any kind will be driven into masonry within three (3) inches to a corner or edge? AFI 91-203 para. 12.6.3.8
