1.0 Training Program (Safety / Training Department)

  • Does the site have an electrical awareness training for all new hires?

  • Does the site have an authorized user training for employees who will be working on electrical equipment?

  • Does the site have a separate training for employees who will work in the switch yard?

  • Are electricians or other employees who regularly work on or around energized electrical equipment or lines instructed in CPR?

  • Are employees trained how to visually test ARC rated PPE?

  • Does the site have a training that identifies the hazards within potlines?

  • Does the site have retraining requirements for all employees?

  • Does the site have an electrical safety program?

2.0 Electrical Safety Program

  • Are all employees required to report as soon as practicable any obvious hazard to life or property observed in connection with electrical equipment or lines?

  • Are multiple plug adaptors prohibited in the program and rules?

  • There is a rule that extension cords are not permitted in potlines?

  • Is the location of electrical power lines and cables determined before digging, drilling or similar work is performed?

  • Are tape measures of the metal type prohibited from Potlines.

  • Is the use of metal ladders prohibited where a person could come into contact with parts of electrical equipment? (power lines, MCC rooms, Potlines)

  • Are employees prohibited from working alone on energized lines or equipment excess of 600 volts?

  • Are ARC rated gloves tested prior to first use and every six months there after?

3.0 Equipment Specifications / Safety Devices (Visual Inspection)

  • Are portable electrician tools and equipment grounded or of the double insulated type?

  • Are electrical appliances such as vacuum cleaners, polishers and vending machines grounded?

  • Do extension cords being used have a grounding conductor?

  • Are multiple plug adaptors not used?

  • Does the site have electrical installations in hazardous dust or vapor areas? If so to they meet the NEC for hazardous locations? (If not to the first question simply mark N/A

  • Are exposed wiring and cords with frayed or deteriorations insulation repaired or replaced promptly?

  • Are flexible cords and cables free of slices or taps?

  • In wet locationsare elctrical tools and equipment appropriate for the use or location or otherwise protected?

  • Are only non-conductive measureing tapes, ropes, handlines or similar devices used for electrical purposes?

  • Are all disconnecting switches and circuit breakers labeled to indicate their use or equipment being served?

  • Are energized parts of electrical circuits and equipment guarded against accidental contact by approved cabinets or enclosures?

  • Are electrical working areas and MCC rooms free from clutter, which provide access to equipment for safe operations and maintenance?

  • Are electrical enclosures including receptacles and junction boxes, etc covered with covers of plates to prevent accidental exposure?

  • Is the motor disconnecting switch or circuit breaker within site of the Motor Control Device?

  • Do MCC room cabinets and disconnects have ARC flash warning label for designating limited and restricted approach?

  • Is the cord jacket securely held in place on tools and appliances?

4.0 Employee behaviors (Observation and Visual Inspection)

  • Are all employees required to report as soon as practicable any obvious hazard to life or property observed in connection with electrical equipment or lines?

  • When electrical equipment or lines are to be services, maintained or adjusted, are necessary switches opened, locked out, or tagged out whenever possible?

  • Employees are not using cords with frayes or deterioration?

  • Are disconnecting means always opened before fuses are replaced?

  • Does employee wear proper PPE when working on or around open cabinets?

5.0 Documentation and Retention (Safety/Medical)

  • Does the site maintain documentation of awareness trainings?

  • Does the site maintain documentation of all authorized employee electrical training?

  • Does the site maintain documentation of ARC rated PPE being inspected?

  • Does the site maintain a log of all ARC rated PPE on plant site and the expiration date of it?
