Machinary Audit

Guarding Requirements New /Existing Machinery

  • Is guarding required to stop workers coming in contact with dangerous moving parts?

  • Does the machine need maintenence access more than once a shift?

  • Is guarding needed to stop objects or access to moving parts or to stop parts exploding out of the machine?

  • Is it required that guards are removed to maintain the machine if it was enclosed fully?

  • Is it necessary that ergonomics are built on top guarding to ensure its safe and comfortable for its use?

  • If there are already guards can they be improved in your opinion?

Operator hazards (point of operation)

  • Are there any parts not guarded at the point of operation?

  • Could the operator put their hands, fingers or any other body part in dangerous part's?

  • Have any original guards been removed? If so why?

  • Knowing the operators use, is there a better guard that could be used?

  • Is there other means to remove point of operation hazards? If yes suggest how.

  • Are tooling or equipment used in machine operation contribute to any hazard associated with the machinary? If yes describe.

Operator Control's

  • At any point in operation are controls out of reach of the operator?

  • Recommendation:

  • If there is more than one operator, at any time does rougher operator have the controls out of their reach?

  • Recommendation:

  • Can controls be accidentally turned on in any way?

  • Recommendation:

  • Are controls labeled clearly? Answer yes if they are not suitable.

  • Recommendation:

  • Are controls mis matched to other dominant equipment in the place of work?

  • Recommendation:

  • Would it be easy to miss where the emergency stop is?

  • Recommendation:

  • If the power goes out can the machine start back up by its self when power comes back on?

  • Recommendation:

Mechanical Transmission Hazards

  • Is their any access to sprockets, pulleys, or flywheels? Including during normal maintenence

  • Recommendation:

  • Are there any exposed belts or chain drives?

  • Recommendation:

  • Are there any hazardous moving parts exposed including auxiliary parts?

  • Recommendation:

  • If your at the transmission parts are stop controls out of reach?

  • Recommendation:

Other Hazards

  • Are there other Hazards such as noise, fumes or dust?

  • Recommendation:

  • Are workers supplied ppe gear suitable to manage these hazards? Answer yes if they DONT.

  • Recommendation:

  • Are there hazards with layout, repeditive movement and workload?

  • Recommendation:

Electrical Hazards

  • Is the test and tag expired or not in place? Comment how often they are done.

  • Recommendation:

  • Are there lose fittings or open electrical boxes?

  • Recommendation:

  • Do workers ever get minor shocks of the machine?

  • Recommendation:

Training and Supervision

  • Can workers explain how to use guarding and competent? Are there records detailing training?

  • Recommendation:

  • Can workers describe where guards are, how they protect them and what hazards they protect them from?

  • Recommendation:

  • Are operators supervised by suitably trained staff?

  • Recommendation:

  • Are workers trained to know what to do if they notice guards are missing out not suitable?

  • Recommendation:

Protective Equipment

  • Is PPE gear needed?

  • Recommendation:

  • Do they have correct PPE gear for the job?

  • Recommendation:

  • Is the operator wearing any inappropriate clothing or accessories?

  • Recommendation:

Repair and Cleaning (including maintenence)

  • Is there up to date procedures for maintenence and cleaning of machines?

  • Recommendation:

  • Is their lock out procedures and are they followed by workers and contractors?

  • Recommendation:

  • Does maintenance equipment pose a significant hazard?

  • Recommendation:

  • When multiple people work on machines is there a group lock out procedure and it's strictly followed?

  • Recommendation:

  • Does the machine get properly maintained and cleaned on a regular schedule?

  • Recommendation:

Machine Setup

  • Is the machine secure in place and can't tip over?

  • Recommendation:

  • Is the lady out of the machine give the operators and others a good working space?

  • Recommendation:
