Medicine Control Procedure (B.GM.PR.OH.15)

Purchasing/Receiving/Control of Medicine:

  • 1. The OHP sign all purchase orders

  • 2. Expired Medicine is demarcated and in a sealed container clearly marked "Expired Medicine"

  • 3. Dispensing License in place

  • 4. Storage of Medicine: <br><br>Area is clean, secure and suitable for compounding and dispensing with sufficient lighting

  • 5. Temperature in the medicine room does not exceed 25'C and daily temperature checks are recorded

  • 6. Flammable and Hazardous materials such as Ethanol and Methylated Spirits stored separately or in ventilated metal cupboard

  • 7. Fridges are clean and defrosted, ice build-up <1/2cm

  • 8. Shake Test:<br><br>To determine whether vaccines such as DTP, DT, TT, Hep B and HiB have been frozen, shake the vials. If it has never been frozen, it will turn cloudy and smooth immediately after being shaken. No sediment or very little sediment will have formed at the bottom of the vial after standing for 30 minutes. If granular particles can be seen after shaking and heavy sediment is present - DISCARD
