Storage of materials

  • Shelving surface is non-absorbent, not damaged or bowed and secure

  • Frequently used and heavy items are stored at mid-height (between knee and shoulder height)

  • Storage space is large enough to enable free movement in the space when trolley is removed

  • Floor is free from obstructions and trip hazards

Housekeeping

  • Where possible, equipment is kept off the floor, for example backpack vacuum stored on hooks

Chemical Storage

  • There is no evidence of spillage or leaks

  • Not stored on high shelving, above shoulder height

  • The area is free from food and drink containers

  • There are hand washing facilities available

Hazardous Substances

  • Safety data sheets (SDS) available and in date (no older than 5 years from the date on the SDS)

  • Chemical index available

  • Risk assessment has been completed for hazardous substances and recorded with relevant controls in place

  • Record of training for use of hazardous substances available

  • Containers holding decanted chemicals, such as spray bottle, are labelled correctly

  • Flammable products are stored away from sources of heat

  • Doors are lockable with limited access to prevent students entering

Eyewash

  • There is a record showing the eyewash is flushed weekly

  • There is a record showing the eyewash is serviced annually

Spill kit

  • A spill kit and personal protective equipment is available for cleaning up bodily fluids and chemical spills

Lighting

  • Lighting is sufficient and fluorescent tubes are covered

Ventilation

  • Storeroom is ventilated (open window, door grill or mechanical system)

Manual equipment

  • Mops, brooms in good repair

  • Squeeze buckets easy to operate, not seized

  • Chemical dispensing system working effectively, if available

Ladders

  • Ladders are of industrial standards and are in good condition

Electrical

  • Electrical cords and plugs are in good condition with no splits, cracks, damage, permanently kinked or exposed wires

  • Equipment and appliances are working effectively and are in good condition

  • Leads are stored correctly, for example looped loosely

  • Equipment has been tagged and tested within the past 12 months

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • PPE is clean and in good condition

  • PPE stored correctly in a clean, closed container

Evacuation plan, first aid procedures

  • Clearly displayed

  • Plan caters for 'out-of-normal working hours' personnel

  • Working alone plan available, if required

  • Cleaning staff have easy access to a reliable means of communication
