Safety Guidelines

  • Follow site safety rules and your supervisor's instructions

  • Use proper personal protective equipment when servicing batteries and handling electrolytes

  • Follow site environmental policy for using and old batteries and electrolyte

  • Voltage is present on batteries at all times. When working on the battery system care must be taken not to short across the posts. Breaking the string by disconnecting inter-cell connectors in several places will reduce but not eliminate the risks. Never open an inter-cell connection when the battery is connected to the system. Voltage is sometimes present from the posts to the racks. Do not touch the posts and the rack at the same time.

  • Electrolyte is always a danger in a battery room. Make sure there is water available to rinse your eyes or affected areas

  • Consult battery manufacturer’s literature for proper servicing

  • Record and report to your supervisor any equipment damage or problems identified while<br>performing this maintenance task.

Maintenance Procedures

  • Visually check the general appearance and cleanliness of the battery storage system

  • Check the ambient temperature and condition of the ventilating equipment

  • Record the float voltage measured at the battery terminals

  • Record charger output current and voltage

  • Record pilot cell data:

  • Cell voltage.

  • b.Cell specific gravity and electrolyte temperature for lead-acid batteries, corrected for temperature

  • Check for evidence of corrosion at terminals or connectors

  • Check for cell cracks and loose connections

  • Check for evidence of voltage leaks to ground

  • Check 10 percent of inter-cell connection resistances chosen at random

  • Record the voltage of each cell

  • Record the specific gravity of each cell for lead-acid batteries, corrected for temperature

  • Record the electrolyte temperature of one out of each six cells chosen at random
