Pre-start checks

  • Complete all checks before engaging the saw with timber. Ensure any faults have information entered into the text box and take a photo. Rectify any faults (within your training & capability) - if fault cannot be fixed, fail line item and raise with your Groups' asset manager to rectify.

  • Visual inspection of the complete machine, note/photo any issues

  • Check control handle to ensure controls are working

  • Check chain tension

  • Fill fuel and oil reservoirs

  • Check idle speed - chain must not rotate

  • Check to see if the chain is being oiled

  • Check the throttle trigger for smooth operation

  • Test the stop switch to be sure it shuts off the engine

  • Check that the Anti Vibration elements are not soft or torn

  • Check the saw chain with regard to visible cracks in the rivets and links, whether the saw chain is stiff or whether the rivets and links are abnormally worn. Replace if necessary.

  • Make sure that the chain catcher is undamaged, and replace it if necessary.

Servicing

  • Ensure any faults have information entered into the text box and take a photo. Rectify any faults (within your training & capability) - if fault cannot be fixed, fail line item and raise with your Groups' asset manager to rectify.

  • Clean the outside of the machine.

  • Check that the Anti Vibration elements are not soft or torn

  • Sharpen the chain and check its tension and condition. Check the drive sprocket for wear. Replace if necessary

  • The bar should be turned for more even wear. Check the lubrication hole in the bar, to be sure it is not clogged. Clean the bar groove, if the bar has a sprocket tip, this should be lubricated

  • File off burrs, if any, on the sides of the bar

  • Check the saw chain with regard to visible cracks in the rivets and links, whether the saw chain is stiff or whether the rivets and links are abnormally worn. Replace if necessary.

  • Make sure that the chain catcher is undamaged, and replace it if necessary.

  • Check the drive sprocket for excessive wear and replace if necessary.

  • Check for any loose nuts and screws and retighten if necessary

  • Check that there are no fuel leaks from the engine, tank or fuel lines.

  • Check the starter, starter cord and the recoil spring. Clean the fins on the flywheel

  • Clean the cooling fins on the cylinder.

  • Clean or change the spark arrester screen in the muffler

  • Clean the carburettor body and air box

  • Clean or replace the air filter as necessary. Check for damage or holes

  • Clean the spark plug and check the gap. Correct gap is 0.5 mm

  • Check the fuel filter and hose. Change if necessary.

  • Empty and check the inside of the fuel tank, and oil tank.

  • Check all cables and connections

Post-servicing start-up

  • Does the saw idle smoothly?

  • Is the chain being oiled

  • Check the throttle trigger for smooth operation

  • Test the stop switch to be sure it shuts off the engine

  • Is the saw re-fuelled and re-oiled suitable for next operation/storage?

Completion

  • Any faults or additional items to be added to this inspection?
