1- This check list applies to all buildings with a total floor area of 300m2 and above

  • Evacuation Signs are displayed in a conspicuous locations ?

  • Evacuation Signs indicate evactions paths and exits for each part of the building ?

  • Evacuation signs are orientated so the direction of the route shown on the sign from the place in the building where the map is displayed to the nearest exit of the building corresponds with the actual direction of the route from the place to the exit?

  • Evacuation Signs are securely attached to the wall or internal side of the door. Blue tac, sticky tape and velcro adhesives are not considered securely fastened.

2-Evacuation routes are clear of obstructions

  • There is a 2m clearance area outside of the final exits

  • There are no obstructions likely to restrict persons using the evacuation routes, including persons with special needs

  • There is nothing likely to be displaced by persons using the evacuation routes

3-Evacuation Routes Doors

  • Evacuation doors must open from the internal side using 1 device that can be opened by1 downward or pushing action using 1 hand. EG, a handle , lever or panic bar, a device consisting of a button/ switch that can be operated to allow a door to open electronically and automatically allows the door to be opened if the door fails to open electronically

  • OR, in another way that complies with the National Construction Codes

4-Evacuation routes - Air Space / Fire Isolated Compartments

  • Fire or smoke doors are not chocked in the open position, unless they are designed with automatic release mechanisms

5-Occupancy Safety: Building use

  • The number and location of building exits matches with the evacuation signs installed

  • The building's existing Certificate of Classification /Certificate of Occupancy is on display?

  • The current building use is inline with the existing Certificate of Classification / Certificate of Occupancy

  • Flammable goods on site are stored appropriately in flammable liquids cabinet

  • Occupancy limits for the building are not being exceeded as per the existing classification / occupancy certificate

  • Building Occupants can exit directly to a open space or place of safety
