Safety Notes
-
1. Sulphuric Acid In Batteries Can Cause Severe Tissue Damage
-
2. Lead-Acid storage Batteries produce hydrogen and oxygen which when ignited by a spark or a flame may explode the battery case
-
3. always use an electric light for enhanced visibility when working with batteries. Eliminate all ignition sources
-
4. Do not expose wet batteries to ignition sources
-
5. Do not dispense un-neutralised spill in drains or water courses
-
6. Do not work on a battery while a vehicles engine is running

Planning
-
Storage batteries in a dry, well- ventilated area to prevent build up of explosive gases
-
Ensure light fittings & wiring in battery storage area is sealed
-
Display a dangerous goods sign when total capacity of wet batteries or battery fluid stored Exceeds 1,000 liters
-
Provide trolley or for moving Battries & exercise correct manual handling procedures when lifting
-
Provide adequate ventilation in case of large quantity of spilt battery fluid
Prestart Checks
-
Remove ant jewelry that could come in contact with Battries
-
Remove all ignition sources
Operation
-
Follow vehicle manufactures instructions when replacing or working on batteries
-
Avoid tipping batteries as wet batteries are filled with acid which can burn
-
Set charger to correct voltage output and the polarity of the connections to avoid damage to the charger of the battery
-
Switch charger off before cables are attached or disconnected from the battery to reduce chance of spark
-
A battery an intermittent, internal break should be replaced
-
Use a battery tester to determine level of charge
-
Do not short across the posts as this could result in burn to the hands
-
Slowly top up battery fluid/acid. Avoid overfilling & contact with skin/eyes/clothing.
-
Use electric powered/flameproof light to check battery acid levels
-
Clean up spills and leaks as they accur
-
Neutralise spill with bicarbonate of soda and test PH level
-
Remove & attach battery cables to & from battery terminals in the correct order depending if battery is positive or negative earthed. Refer to manufactures instructions
-
Use insulated tools to connect & disconnect batteries to prevent creating a spark with part of the vehicle & igniting any hydrogen gas around the battery
Completion
-
Flush spill area with copious amounts of water to clear
