  • Have you seen evidence of RAMS?

  • Are substances hazardous to health in use?

  • Have COSHH assessments for materials to be used been completed?

  • COSHH assessment seen?

  • Have building occupants been told of any substances that could pose a health risk to certain groups e.g. pregnant, asthma

  • Is F10 displayed?

  • Have operatives received induction training?

  • Has training records been seen?

Emergency procedures

  • Are contractors aware of fire procedures?

  • Has a first aider been appointed?


  • Is there a signing in procedure?

  • Have compound and parking arrangements been agreed?

  • Is site fenced off/signed to denote boundaries?

  • Are skips kept away from buildings and lockable where possible?

  • Is site secure out of hours?

Welfare & Environment

  • Have welfare provisions been provided e.g. toilets, hand washing facilities and kitchen/staff area

  • Have steps been taken to maximise recycling/re-use?

Regular Site Visit

  • Were you asked to sign-in?

  • Are all contractors easily identified by corporate clothing or conspicuous ID badge?

  • Are contractors provided with relevant PPE where required?

  • Are contractors using it?


  • Is appropriate fire fighting equipment, escape signs and evacuation procedures in view?

  • Where hot works are taking place is a permit to work in place?

  • Where covers/isolation of fire detection is approved, is it uncovered/made active at end of each shift?


  • Is plant and equipment in good condition and guards provided as required?

  • Is all electrical equipment battery/low voltage, or with protection (RCD) incorporated into system?

  • Is access equipment being used?

  • Is access equipment in good condition and suitable for operations being carried out?

  • Has access equipment (i.e. scaffold) been erected by a competent person and is regularly checked?

  • Are contractors operating powered equipment (fork lifts, MEWPs etc) trained and competent in their use?

Site Operations

  • Is interface with staff and students managed well e.g. signage,barriers etc?

  • Are operations that create dust, noise, fumes etc controlled to minimise exposures?

  • Is housekeeping good, e.g. sound surfaces, tidy to minimise slips/trips, spill management and cleaning?

  • Are welfare facilities kept clean and stocked with relevant supplies?

  • Is first aider on site?

  • Is first aid box onsite and well stocked?

  • Is movement of vehicles controlled e.g. banks person?

  • Are the site boundaries, work-spaces, compound, skips and parking in accordance with those agreed?
