Stair safety maintenance check

  • Click add to start first stairway

  • Add stairway to checklist
  • Enter stairway location

  • What are the stairs constructed from

  • Please describe

Handrail compliance and safety

  • Is there a hand rail on the stair?

  • Australian standard specifies every stairway must be provided with at least 1handrail

  • Does the stairway's width exceed 1000mm

  • Is there a handrail on each side of the stairway?

  • Australian standards specify that stairways exceeding 1000mm shall have a handrail on each side

  • What is the height of the handrail above the step in millimetres

  • For stairways to comply they must have a handrail with no obstruction above them and be between 865mm and 1000mm above the top of the step

  • Is the handrail free of obstructions on or above that would break your hand hold?

  • Handrails must be clear of obstructions above or on that could break your hand hold

Stair treads

  • What is the height of each step (riser) in millimetres

  • Each stair height should be between 115mm and 190mm

  • Slide the slider to the length in millimetres of the length ( going) of the step

  • Add 2X the riser plus the length of the going and slide the slider to the value

  • The value of 2x the riser plus the length of the going should be between 550 mm and 700 mm for design compliance. Refer to a specialist for advice.

  • Check if there is a "visual" strip on the front edge of the steps

  • Is this strip in good condition, if no please comment

  • Visual strips are to assist visually impaired persons, current design rules require this strip but it is not retrospective, consider installing visual nosing strip

General condition of the stairs

Rails of the stairs

  • Are the hand rails securely attached?

  • Are the handrails in good condition without rust, splinters and cracks?

General condition of steps

  • Do the the steps appear sound and secure, with no loose bricks or treads?

  • Are the steps free of chipped nosing

  • Is the stairway free of other issues in need of attention
