Work Activity: Arrival on Site

Hazards Present: Moving vehicles, people (staff and customers), access, falling objects, heavy lifting, slips,trips & falls, Hazardous substances, noise, biological factors

Risk Control Measures: High-Vis clothing, appropriate PPE, appropriate parking, advise client & others of arrival on site, display identification,

Work Activity: Use of Chemicals - paints, glues, solvents, adhesives, petrol, poisons

Hazards Present: Hazardous substances, manual handling, slips/trips, exposure to inhalation, absorption and ingestion, spray drift

Risk Control Measures: Handle according to manufacturers instructions (including label and SDS), appropriate PPE, wear moisture resistant boots with adequate grip, mix substances on level ground & away from others, replace lid on container, always use back flow prevention device

Work Activity: Safe use of manual tools / saws, hammers, screwdrivers

Hazards Present: Cuts, abrasions, splinters, eye damage due to flying debris

Risk Control Measures: Concentrate on what is being done & don't get distracted, wear appropriate PPE, use tools as intended, keep tools in good working condition.

Work Activity: Working on or around sewer, drains & piping
Note: SWMS Required for trenches greater than 1.5m deep

Hazards Present: Cuts, hazardous substances, slip/trip/fall, contact with mobile plant, fall into open trenches

Risk Control Measures: Wear appropriate PPE, use of disinfectant for hands, ensure trenches are filled & appropriately barricaded, plant operator aware of all people on site, provide SDS.

Work Activity: Work with Machine Excavator

Hazards Present: Injury to site personnel, below ground services

Risk Control Measures: Only licensed personnel to operate plant, daily machine checks/log book, plant operator aware of all site personnel, pedestrian detours in place (clearly defined and protected), buckets and blades lowered when not in use, services location (dial before you dig), overhead power lines.

Work Activity: Unloading of equipment

Hazards Present: Fall from vehicle, traffic hazards, unfamiliar work site, electrocution

Risk Control Measures: Wear appropriate PPE, unload vehicles in clear traffic areas, use of bollards and signage, conduct thorough site inspection, be aware of overhead power lines

Work Activity: Manual Handling Activities

Hazards Present: Back strain, muscle strain, impact injuries

Risk Control Measures: Warm up briefly, keep back straight, eyes fixed straight ahead, lift with legs and not back, use trolley or mechanical means if possible, use additional people if heavy load, wear appropriate PPE, don't twist

Work Activity: Safe use of ladders

Hazards Present: Falls, sprains, breaks, back injury

Risk Control Measures: Inspect ladder prior to each use (clean and undamaged), only use industrial rated ladder, two persons to carry if required, secure ladder to structure before use, have spotter to support ladder, use appropriate footwear, have 3 limbs on ladder at all times, never use hands to carry items on ladder, do not use ladder when broken, patched, oily or cracked rails, only one person to work on standard ladder.

Work Activity: Working Near Traffic

Hazards Present: Impact with vehicles, slips, trips and falls

Risk Control Measures: Wear high-vis vests, look before crossing roads/driveways/carparks etc, signs and traffic control in place before work commencing, wear appropriate PPE, be aware of warning devices, beepers and buzzers, don't work alone.

Work Activity: Working at Heights
NOTE: SWMS required if working over 2m

Hazards Present: Falls, falling objects

Risk Control Measures:When working at heights over 2m, ensure appropriate fall protection is in place, develop SWMS prior to commencing work, locate power lines and stay 2m clear, identify other obstructions, ensure ladders placed on level surface, barcode area, isolate hazards & control risks.

Work Activity: Use of Scaffolding - Fixed & Portable

Hazards Present: If over 4m, the person erecting the scaffold must hold appropriate certification, kkckboards and handrails must be installed & secured in place, all tools/equipment shall be removed when scaffold not in use, regular checking for faults, damage and stability, minimum clearance to electrical wires of 4m, mobile scaffolding wheel locks must be engaged when scaffold in use, no work to be performed on scaffold in wet weather, do not climb scaffold via standards or transoms, do not exceed manufacturers recommended weight loads.

Work Activity: Use of Power Tools

Hazards Present: Electric shock, burns, excessive noise, cuts, abrasions, amputations, eye injuries

Risk Control Measures: Equipment test/tag in place, visually check safety features and guards in place before use, don't operate in wet conditions, ensure earth leaking protection is in place and at the supply end of extension lead, if device trips do not restart until cause of issue is found, switch off tool if any faults or abnormal actions become apparent, wear appropriate PPE, and secure loose hair and clothing

Work Activity: Hot Work - Electric or Gas Welding/Soldering/Cutting

Hazards Present: Burns, welding flash, fire, falling Roxy, acetylene, Roxy and acetylene flashback

Risk Control Measures: Wear appropriate PPE, currently tagged, in date fire extinguisher must be available where hot work is to take place, do not use cylinders which are standing in an enclosed vehicle, is there is a possibility of a leak, test with soap and water, ensure no flammable liquids in the vicinity, bottles to be chained when in upright position, hoses to be fitted with flashback arresters and regulators, after use cylinder valves are tightly shut, outlet gas plugs and valve protection caps installed.
