Manual Handling

Incorrect manual handling is one of the most common causes of injury at work.
It causes work related muscular skeletal disorders which account for over a third of all workplace.
Employees Responsibility
-
As an employee we respectfully ask that you note the following
1. Follow safe systems of work
2. Use equipment provided for safety properly
3. Cooperate with your employer on health and safety matters
4. Inform your employer if you identify hazardous handling activities
5. Take care to make sure your activities do not put others at risk
Carrying out manual handling
-
1. Avoid manual handling if possible
2. Where possible use handling aids
3. Do not take any risks and seek assistance if required
4. Do not lift or handle more than can be easily managed
6. No employee is expected to move large pieces of machinery
Safe manual handling
-
A qualified person will demonstrate good manual handling techniques.
This will cover:
1. Adopt a stable position
2. Get a good hold
3. Start in a good posture
4. Don't over flex the back whilst lifting
5. Keep the load close to the waist
6. Avoid twisting or leaning sideways
7. Keep your head up when lifting
8. Place the load down safely
