Site Management

  • Is there a body of water within a 100-meter radius of the facility?

  • Does the facility have proper measures in place to prevent water contamination?

  • Describe the water sources that the facility relies on.

  • How many times per year is the facility inspected for compliance with water quality regulations?

Water Quality

  • Is there a documented procedure for Water Analysis including: Frequency of sampling, person responsible for sampling, method of sample collection, laboratory analyzing the samples, location sampled

  • Are there documentation and records kept for water quality testing results?

  • When was the last water quality test conducted?

  • Is there a process in place for corrective actions based on results of the water analysis?

Water Management Practices

  • Recirculated water used during production, harvest, and post harvest is changed or replenished frequently?

  • Treated Water used during harvest or post harvest is monitored appropriately?

  • How much water does the farm use monthly and yearly and how does this water usage change throughout the year?

  • Storage of water does not pose any food safety risks?

  • Water storage facilities are present and well maintained to take advantage of periods of maximum water availability?

  • Does your facility assess how water risks throughout the value chain upstream and downstream may affect your own facility (suppliers, consumers)?

  • • Are you collaborating with external stakeholders on water issues on a regular basis?

  • • Does your facility have water standards that are notably beyond compliance and/or leading in its sector?

  • • Are your facility’s standard practices approaching best-in-class in your sector and are they tailored to your watershed?

  • • Do your facility’s meters and monitoring systems track real-time data that immediately feed into water-related key performance indicators (KPIs)?

  • • Does your facility understand its most critical water circuits and have plans in place to optimize them?

  • • Do you take immediate action when a water system fails?

  • • Does your staff have a mindset to identify water reuse and recycle opportunities?

  • • Does equipment have remote monitoring systems, so it can be shut down when it is left running?

  • • Does your staff know how to assign a monetary value to a leak based on what is leaking (e.g., product, steam, condensate, cold water, etc.)?

  • • Have you identified water reuse and recycle opportunities in utility and process systems?

  • • Is the connection between water and energy understood and are you saving energy by optimizing water?

  • • Are you monitoring the current or future incoming water quality impairments that may adversely impact your products?

  • • Have you started considering ways to manufacture your product with less water?

Water Target Setting

  • • Does your facility have defined, enterprise-level targets that are also context-based in your local watershed and incorporate resiliency concerns such as current and future water demand and supply?

  • • Are there several investments dedicated to water reuse and recycling projects?

  • • Is the full value of water incorporated into calculating return on investment decisions?

  • • Do your water-related investments also include product- or service-focused research and design? In other words, are you designing more water-efficient products and services?

Water Stewardship

  • • Does your facility track water demand and wastewater discharge from other water users in the same watershed?

  • • Does your facility have an Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) certification plan in place and is it pursuing certification?

  • • Does your facility actively collaborate on water issues with external stakeholders, including industry groups and/or local government?

  • • Does your facility use quantitative and/or qualitative measures for external stakeholder wellbeing in its water-related decisions? Do these measures consider the full value of water?

  • • Does your facility use these measures or other stakeholder inputs to set targets? Do these targets aim to replenish or restore the local water sources the facility consumes?

  • Do You have a Water Management Plan in Place?

  • Provide an image of the facility's wastewater treatment system.
