General

  • Are the emergency contact numbers and procedures accessible to staff?

  • Are the kitchen preparation areas and work surface clean, clear and safe to use?

  • Are the carpets frayed or worn out in the communal areas and all the bedrooms?

  • Are all handrails in the staircase in good condition and not lose or broken?

  • Are the handrails in the bathrooms in good condition and not lose or broken?

  • Are the wheelchair and mobility aids in good condition?

  • Are the ovens clean?

  • Is the extractor in the kitchen clean?

  • Is the extractor in the bathrooms clean?

  • Is the lighting adequate and in good condition throughout the property and outside?

  • Are all radiators working properly?

  • Is there a clear access to gas meter?

  • Is there a clear access to electricity meter?

  • Are COSHH products and cleaning materials kept in locked cupboard?

  • Is the COSHH key kept separately in a safe place?

  • Is the correct PPE used when handling COSHH products available (e.g. gloves, aprons)?

  • Is a warning sign displayed when water in place?

  • Are procedures for spillage in place and is a suitable spillage response kit present and in good condition?

  • Are basic hygiene procedures in place, including regular hand washing?

  • Are the washing machine detergent drawers clean?

  • Is the fluff in the dryer been cleared out?

Fire Management Checks

  • Is the fire evacuation plan displayed, and all staff and tenants are aware of it?

  • Is the fire-alarm working? (this is relevant if you have a fire alarm on site.)

  • Are the smoke detectors working? You need to test them in order to answer this question.

  • Are fire doors working properly? (are they fully closing?)

  • Is the Carbon Monoxide detector working? You need to test it to answer this question.

  • Are all fire extinguishers signs displayed? (showing the type of extinguisher)

  • Are all fire extinguishers in their designated place? And easily accessible?

  • Are all escape routes clear and no items are blocking them?

  • Are all combustible materials away from hobs / heaters /radiators? Please check all the radiators, heaters and hobs to answer this question.

  • Is the electrical cupboard empty of all combustible materials?

  • Are all the Emergency Bag items in the bag? entry card; contact numbers, foil blankets, whistle, torch, visibility vest, small first aid kit.

  • Is the torch in the emergency bag working?

  • Is the emergency bag located by the front door?

  • Are sockets all in a good condition? You need to check them in all communal areas and bedrooms.

  • Are all electrical cables in good condition and there is no wear and tear? (e.g. TV, laptop, charger cables)

  • Are all outside paths and steps in good condition?

  • Is the garden well kept, free of clutter, grass short and neat?

  • Is there enough grit in case of frost or snow?
