Access & Housekeeping

  • Does the cleaning take place out of hours when the building is unoccupied?

  • Are the premises clean & tidy?

  • Are Hand Sanitisation stations in place?

  • Do employees have access to antibacterial wipes or equivalent to enable frequent cleaning of their workstations?

  • Are waste bins emptied regularly to prevent overflow?

  • Is the flooring throughout the building in good condition and free from slip, trip & fall hazards?

  • Are stair treads in good condition?

  • Are staircase banisters / handrails in good condition?

  • Are access / egress routes free from obstruction?

  • Are No Smoking signs in place?

External Areas

  • Is the walkway outside the building in good condition and free from obstruction?

  • Are vehicles parked in the correct bays and without obstructing fire escapes?

  • Is suitable external lighting in place and operational?

  • Are waste bins secured and emptied regularly to prevent overflow?

Windows

  • Are they able to open safely, without the risk of anyone falling out

  • Are windows cleaned & maintained in good condition?

  • Are suitable window coverings in place?

Storage

  • Is there sufficient storage available across the premises?

  • Are all materials & equipment suitably & safely stored? (Heavy items at the bottom, lighter higher up. No glass items above head height)

  • Is warehouse racking in good condition?

  • Are maximum load weight signs applied to the racking units?

  • Can safe access be made to materials & equipment being stored?

Electrical Safety

  • Does the electrical hardwiring have a valid Satisfactory inspection report?

  • Is access to electrical distribution boards restricted to prevent unauthorised access?

  • Are electrical appliances PAT tested with valid labels in situ?

  • Are visible electrical leads / cables free from damage?

  • Are electrical sockets / outlets being used correctly (1 plug per socket) and are not being overloaded?

  • If extension leads are in use are they fully unwound?

Display Screen Equipment & Workstations

  • Have employees got unobstructed access / egress to and from their workstations?

  • Are employees working side to side or back to back where possible?

  • Do employees have adequate working space allowing freedom of movement?

  • Are workstations generally tidy?

  • Are trailing cables suitably protected to remove risk of trips eg protected in cable trunking / run underneath desks out of the way?

  • Are employees belongings stored to prevent trip hazards

  • Are employees provided with DSE training?

  • Are DSE assessments carried out?

  • Is all Display Screen Equipment suitably mounted and in good working order?

Kitchen Areas

  • Is an adequate cleaning schedule in place and is it being adhered to?

  • Are there sufficient waste receptacles?

  • Is there sufficient work space for users and applicable appliances?

  • Are any applicable safety notices in place incl Hot Water, Keep kitchen tidy etc?

  • Are the microwave and refrigerator regularly cleaned and in good working order?

  • Are taps free from scale & regularly descaled?

Welfare Facilities

  • Are suitable W.C's provided for male & female staff?

  • Are they clean & maintained in good condition?

  • Do they have adequate lighting?

  • Hot & Cold running water?

  • Are handwashing signs in place?

  • Are hand washing soap and drying facilities available?

  • Is sanitary disposal in place?

First Aid

  • Are First Aid kits installed in suitable locations?

  • Are they checked regularly for content and date?

  • Are the first aid supplies in date?

  • Is there sufficient First Aider provision for the premises?

  • Are the names & locations of appointed first aiders displayed?

  • Is there an eyewash kit installed on the premises?

  • Are the bottles or pods full and are seals unbroken?

  • Are eyewash supplies within date?

Fire Precautions

  • Is a valid Fire Risk Assessment in place?

  • Is a suitable fire alarm & smoke detection system installed?

  • Are there appointed Fire Wardens for the premises? Do they hold valid training certificates?

  • Is the fire alarm tested weekly?

  • Does the fire alarm & smoke detection system have a service & maintenance regime in place?

  • Are fire exits clearly labelled, illuminated and free from obstruction?

  • Are suitable fire extinguishers in place across the premises?

  • Do extinguishers have the correct identification labels on them?

  • Are fire extinguishers visually inspected monthly and serviced annually?

  • Is emergency lighting in place & adequate?

  • Is emergency lighting tested monthly?

  • Is there a procedure in place to report defects with emergency lighting to enable remedial repair?

Fire Instructions

  • Are evacuation instructions clearly posted on notice boards?

  • Are the instructions current and up to date?

  • Have all staff been inducted and instructed on what to do in the event of a fire or emergency?

  • Are fire drills completed six monthly with details recorded?

COSHH

  • Are hazardous substances correctly stored?

  • Are flammable substances correctly stored in suitable locked storage?

  • Are COSHH Assessments & SDS readily available for the substances used on the premises?

Security

  • Are there suitable mechanisms in place to prevent unauthorised access to the premises?

  • Is CCTV in place and operational?

  • Where lone working is undertaken are there suitable precautions in place to minimise risk for persons working alone?
