GENERAL

ELECTRICAL

  • Are leads secured and not potential trip hazards?

  • Are liquids, chemicals and gasses stored away from electrical outlets? I.e glues, paint.

  • Are main distribution boards clearly signed, kept free from obstruction?

  • Are electrical leads safe from damage? i.e. hot surfaces, sharp edges and doorways.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES AND RESPONSE

  • Is emergency equipment readily accessible? I.e. first aid kits, eye wash, cold packs, spill kits and fire warden equipment?

  • Are extinguishers clearly signed, accessible and unobstructed? I.e. one metre clear in front.

  • Has emergency equipment inspected? I.e. check date on tag.

  • Are evacuation maps and emergency numbers prominently displayed and up to date?

FIRE HAZARDS

  • Is combustible material kept to a minimum and stored appropriately?

  • Is fire warden prepared for an emergency?

  • Are flammable substances stored appropriately? I.e. sprays and chemicals away from hot areas (electrical areas).

FIRST AID

  • Are the locations of the first aid kits labelled, visible, easily accessible and known to staff?

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)

  • Is PPE clearly displayed, provided and signed clearly?

  • Is signage on PPE equipment provided about wearing it correctly?

  • Are safe dress codes being enforced by staff members? I.e. eye protection, hearing protection, no loose clothing, steel cap boots.

  • Is all PPE equipment is readily available for use adequate for tasks. I.e. dust coats, aprons.

MANUAL HANDLING EQUIPMENT (MHE)

  • Is MHE adequate for tasks being performed?

  • Are heavily awkward objects stored between knee and shoulder height?

  • We correct MHE techniques used for lifting?

  • We bench surfaces clean and clear?

MACHINERY / EQUIPMENT

  • Does all equipment have warning labels and safe operating procedures?

  • Is lighting adequate and free from flashing?

  • Are emergency shut down switches readily accessible?

  • Are machines adequately locked out when not in use?

  • Are powered tools provided with safety guards?

  • Are any compressed air hoses fitted with safety nozzles?

  • Are hand tools maintained and stored in good condition?

  • Are operating manuals or instructions available for machinery and tools in the Wood Work Room?

  • Are there spill trays, waste bins, soils kits clean and ready for use?

GENERAL CHEMICALS / HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES / DANGEROUS GOODS

  • Are there Safety Data Sheets (<5 years old) for all materials used?

  • Are storage and handling practices in line with the Safety Data Sheets?

  • Are chemicals stored in defined areas away from food products or other items that could be contaminated?

  • Is the appropriate type of PPE available for chemicals used?

  • Are all containers with chemicals appropriately labelled?

DANGEROUS GOODS

  • Are there NO SMOKING and NO NAKED FLAME signs dismayed in appropriate areas?

  • Is the allowable quantity of flammable liquids held in approved safety containers?

  • Are there HAZCHEM / warning notices indicating the presence of flammable liquids /dangerous goods where appropriate?

GLUE USE

  • Is ventilation adequate for the task?

  • Is respiratory protection available if required?

  • Is glue/ chemicals stored appropriately? I.e. small quantities and secure containers.

  • Is eye protection, gloves and aprons provided?

WASTE DISPOSAL

  • Are waste containers correctly labelled?

  • Are recycling, and up cycling systems visible, accessible and utilised?
