Operators details

1.0 - “Pre-start checks”

  • Is the delegate wearing the correct PPE?

  • Did the delegate check the excavators tracks, hydraulic rams, bucket, etc?

  • Did the delegate check the engine bay for fluid levels, deadman, etc?

  • Did the delegate identify all grease points and understand the frequency required to grease all moving parts

  • Did the delegate check all instrumentation is working as it should? Lights, indicators, horn, beacons, etc?

  • Does the delegate understand the daily checks recording and the defect reporting procedure?

  • Did the delegate enter the excavator maintaining three points of contact?

  • Before starting the excavator did the delegate put a seatbelt on?

  • Is the delegate ready for the main assessment?

2.0 - Practical assessment

  • The delegate is told to travel travel to an area selected by the assessor.<br>Did the delegate travel to the area correctly without overly “spragging” or churning up the area, whilst maintaining good all round observation?

  • The assessor signals the delegate to stop and hold position, did the delegate stop and hold position until told to continue with the exercise ?

  • The delegate has been instructed to dig a trench to a specification. Did the delegate request the area be cat scanned before breaking ground?

  • Once the area has been scanned and is confirmed free of underground services the delegate is instructed to begin the digging exercise maintaining a straight and level trench.<br>Has the delegate maintained a straight level trench, ensuring clean and stable banks and all excavated material is clear of the “angle of repose” in a sealed mound?

  • The delegate is then instructed to backfill the excavated area.<br>Did the delegate backfill the trench in layers ensuring good compaction?

  • Lifting operations... as lifting is an essential part of the day to day tasks of an excavator operator. The delegate is asked questions regarding lifting accessories, types of lifts and swl. Did the delegate answer the questions correctly?

  • The delegate is instructed to shutdown the excavator.<br>Did the delegate shutdown the excavator correctly and disembark maintaining 3 points of contact?

3.0 - Assessment

  • Did the delegate demonstrate enough competence to be allowed to operate the machine unsupervised?
