Plans / Drawings

  • Verify approved plans / drawings are on-site or are available to the contractor.

  • Verify that the procedures for unlocking the doors are described in the emergency preparedness plan as required by Chapter 4.

  • Verify a permit application has been submitted for an automatic fire sprinkler system and/or a fire alarm system.

Visual Inspection

  • Occupants will pass through no more than one door equipped with a controlled egress / delayed egress locking system before entering an exit.

  • The door locking system is listed in accordance with UL 294.

  • Door swings in the direction of egress.

  • Emergency lighting is provided at the egress door.

  • “Push to Exit” button is installed, readily visible / accessible, and labeled.

Operational Test

  • Door releases upon fire sprinkler / fire alarm activation.

  • Door releases upon loss of power to the lock or locking mechanism.

  • Door releases upon pressing of “PUSH TO EXIT” button and remains unlocked for 30 seconds.

  • Door releases upon activation of motion sensor.

  • Door releases upon activating an override switch at the fire command center, nursing station, or other approved location.

Delayed Egress

  • Signage that states “PUSH UNTIL ALARM SOUNDS - DOOR CAN BE OPENED IN 15 SECONDS” is located above and within 12 inches of the door hardware.

  • An irreversible process after release device is pressed for 1 second and the door unlocks within 15 seconds.

  • An audible signal activates in the vicinity of the door once the release device is pressed.

  • The delayed egress system must be manually reset.
