1. Purpose

  • The purpose of this Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is to outline the guidelines and procedures for the proper use and maintenance of the Automated External Defibrillator (AED). This SOP aims to ensure the effective and safe use of the AED in emergency cardiac situations.

2. Scope

  • This SOP applies to all individuals who may come into contact with the AED, including designated responders and healthcare professionals within the organization.

3. Definitions

  • AED: Automated External Defibrillator - a portable device that analyses heart rhythms and delivers an electric shock to restore regular heartbeat in cases of sudden cardiac arrest.

4. Procedure

  • 4.1. AED Placement and Accessibility
    4.1.1. Identify and designate appropriate locations for AED placement within the facility, ensuring easy accessibility and visibility.
    4.1.2. Display clear signage indicating the location of the nearest AEDs throughout the premises.
    4.1.3. Regularly check AEDs to ensure they are in their designated locations and easily accessible at all times.

    4.2. AED Training and Authorized Users
    4.2.1. Provide initial training and certification to designated responders on the proper usage of the AED.
    4.2.2. Regularly conduct refresher training sessions to maintain responder competency and familiarity with AED operations.
    4.2.3. Maintain a record of trained personnel authorized to use the AED.

    4.3. AED Maintenance and Inspection
    4.3.1. Assign responsibility for AED maintenance and inspections to a designated individual or team.
    4.3.2. Conduct regular checks of the AED to ensure it is operational by following the manufacturer's instructions.
    4.3.3. Inspect the AED's battery life, electrode pad expiration dates, and overall condition.
    4.3.4. Monitor AED availability, readiness, and any necessary maintenance or repairs.

    4.4. AED Emergency Response Procedure
    4.4.1. In an emergency situation, identify if the patient is unresponsive and not breathing normally.
    4.4.2. Call emergency medical services (EMS) immediately to ensure professional medical assistance.
    4.4.3. Retrieve the AED and follow the device's provided voice or visual prompts.
    4.4.4. Apply appropriate pads to the patient's chest as depicted in the AED's instructions and ensure proper pad placement.
    4.4.5. Stand clear and allow the AED to analyze the patient's heart rhythm.
    4.4.6. If advised by the AED, deliver a shock by following the device's instructions.
    4.4.7. Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as needed, following recognized guidelines.
    4.4.8. Continue to follow prompts from the AED until medical professionals arrive or the patient shows signs of recovery.

5. Documentation

  • All incidents involving the use of the AED, including maintenance and inspections, should be documented in an incident report. This record should include the date, location, individuals involved, actions taken, and any relevant observations.

6. Training Records

  • Maintain accurate training records for authorised AED users, including certification dates, refresher training sessions, and any additional training provided.

7. Review and Revision

  • This SOP should be reviewed regularly to ensure compliance with the latest guidelines, industry best practices, and any updates from AED manufacturers. Any necessary revisions should be communicated to all authorised users.
