Beginning Inspection

  • Are floor surfaces dry, even and clear objects?

  • During winter months are there sufficient mats in place to soak up additional moisture from snow and water?

  • During winter months are shovels/ salt available at each entrance with signage posted for proper use?

  • Emergency exit lighting properly and regularly tested?

Parking Lot/Traffic Control

  • Are walkways level and free of cracks and holes?

  • Do parked vehicles or other obstructions block driveways?

  • Are parking lots in good condition and clearly marked?

  • Are steps, handicap access and crosswalks clearly marked and free of obstacles?

  • Are trip hazards such as curbs, steps and drain gates highlighted?

Fire Prevention

  • Personnel trained to use extinguishers?

  • Extinguishers clear of obstructions?

  • Are smoke and fire alarms in place and functional?

  • Are all ladders sturdy and hung up when not in use?

  • Are there cleaning chemicals?

  • Are MSDS sheets maintained/available on all chemicals for staff and volunteers?

  • Are all janitorial chemicals and cleaners labeled and safely stored?

  • Flammable/combustible materials stored in U.L. Approved storage cabinets?

  • Is there training on use of chemicals and through who?

General Lighting

  • Light bulbs protected?

  • Light fittings clean and in good condition?

Building Safety/housekeeping

  • Floor surfaces even and uncluttered?

  • Entry and walkways kept clear?

  • Walkways adequately and clearly marked?

  • Proper trash receptacles used?

Storage Design and Use

  • All shelving secured?

  • Storage designed to minimise lifting problems?

  • Heavy items on bottom and light on top?

  • Are all TVs secured to TV carts?

  • Are there classrooms?

  • Are all light fixtures covered?

  • Are aquariums and stands properly secured and anchored?

  • Are bookcases securely fastened to wall or floor?

  • Are cooking units and deep fat fryers equipped with a metallic hood and duct system which is also vented to the outside of the building?

  • Are electrical outlets and switches in good working order with covers in place?

  • Are employees trained in the use of automatic and portable fire extinguishing devices?

Other Buildings on the Property

  • Any issues with items stored?

  • Are playgrounds and playground equipment inspected and properly maintained?

Other General Safety Issues

  • Are lawn mowing guidelines in place to prevent injuries to employees and volunteers?

  • Is there a "key control" program?

  • Are bushes and shrubs trimmed from building?

  • Are interior and exterior lights adequate and operational?

  • Are windows clear of cracks and breaks?

  • Is the building checked for stay-behinds before closing the building?

  • Are roof openings, air ducts, skylights, hatch ways and basement openings secured?

  • Are security systems tested monthly and logged?
