The following questions will help to benchmark the energy efficiency of your cold store(s) and prioritise actions which you could take to reduce energy consumption. Further information can be found in the corresponding chapter of the Cold Chain Federation guide 'Energy efficiency in cold stores: a practical guide'
Chapter 2: Your energy use
-
Is your site part of the Climate Change Agreement for cold stores?
-
If yes: do you know how your facilities have performed against the scheme's target for energy efficiency?
-
If yes: do you know how much you save annually by being part of the CCA?
-
If no: Do you actively monitor your energy usage to identify trends?
-
Contact info@coldchainfed.org.uk for further information
Chapter 3: Assessing energy usage & energy strategy
-
Do you have an energy efficiency strategy?
-
Do you have someone responsible for energy and reporting?
-
Do you, as a minimum, record monthly energy usage and cost?
-
Do you have an Action Plan with clear goals for energy efficiency improvements?
Chapter 4: Practical Measures and checks to improve energy efficiency
Heat Gains
Fabric:
-
Do you check for ice and condensation forming on panels within the chamber (daily check)
-
Do you check for damage from moving vehicles and signs of panel deformation, internally and externally (daily check)
-
If an insulated envelope, do you check for standing water on the ceiling (at least monthly)
-
If a frozen cold store, is your underfloor heater mat below 5 deg and above freezing in all areas? (daily check)
-
Have you conducted a thermal survey of the insulated envelope in the last 6 months?
Doors & Openings:
-
Do you have high speed doors at the entrances to your cold store?
-
Have you considered a conveyor (with or without air lock) to bring product into the store?
-
Do you regularly check the loading bay seals are in good condition (at least monthly)
-
Do you regularly check the doors are fully functioing and when closed are not leaking air (at least monthly)?
-
Do your doors only open to the height of the vehicle passing through?
-
Can you reduce the time period the doors are open?
-
Do you have dehumidifiers in your docking area?
-
If yes: do they have a dew point sensor?
-
Have you reviewed your evaporator defrost schedule to ensure this is only happening when required?
Equipment & People
-
Do you ensure all electrical equipment not in use is turned off?
-
When purchasing new electrical equipment, do you ensure they have the lowest electical energy usage possible?
-
Do you check daily that MHE batteries are in good condition and still maintaining their charge sufficiently?
Product Load
-
Do you check incoming product is arriving at the required storage temperatures?
Lighting
-
Have you switched to LED lighting in your cold stores?
-
Do you have movement sensors in racking areas?
Refrigeration Systems
Maintenance
-
Do you check that your condensers and evaporators are free of ice (daily)?
-
Do you check that your air cooled condensers are not blocked with dirt (at least monthly)?
-
Do you check that your evaporators for internal ice build up (at least monthly) and have a 6-12 month cleaning regime in place?
-
Do you regularly (at least monthly) remove non-condensable gases (eg. air) from condensers?
-
Have you (at least monthly) checked your cold store operating set points?
-
Do you calibrate temperature sensors (at least monthly)
Smart Monitoring
-
Do have a smart monitoring system in place?
Chapter 5: Challenging Workforce behaviours
-
Do you include energy efficiency awareness as part of staff training?
-
Is energy performance included in staff briefings and newsletters?
-
Do you incentivise (recognition) for staff members going the extra mile to save energy?
-
Do you display information on energy efficiency measures around your sites?
-
Do you have an energy efficiency policy for visiting contractors?
Chapter 6: Renewable Energy
-
Have you assessed the options for investing in renewable energy at your site(s)?
