Contaminated / Flammable Atmosphere

 • A SWMS/JSA has been developed to ensure air quality and ventilation needs have been assessed and controlled, taking into account the nature of the work, duration of the exposure and the number of workers exposed.

 • documented process/procedure (or similar document) that identifies a process and methodology for identifying atmospheric contaminates that may pose a risk to health and safety, including hazardous contaminates and flammable/explosive atmospheres.

 • SWMS/JSAs identify contaminated / flammable atmospheres and details controls to;
Prevent or minimise exposure
Minimise risk of fire and/or explosion

 • Hot work procedure and associated hot work permit controls.

 • Controls are in place to prevent inert atmospheres and oxygen deficient atmospheres.

 • Fan and local exhaust ventilation is utilised to remove contaminates and dilute flammable atmospheres.

 • Exposure levels have been identified and are in acceptable limits, in accordance with legislative requirements.

 • Exposure limits have been identified, assessed, documented and are in accordance with relevant legislation, standards and codes

 • SWMS/JSAs contain target limits and control action levels to mitigate exposure below exposure limits.

 • Emergency procedures that have been developed specifically address and control the contaminated atmosphere.

 • An emergency plan or response plan has been established that identifies potential emergency scenarios associated with contaminated atmospheres on the project. This may include; (but not limited to)
Fire and/or explosion
Contaminant over-exposure
Contaminant poisoning
• Drill record of contaminated related emergency response scenarios.

 • Documented process/procedure (or similar document) that identifies a requirement and specifies the methodology for continuous monitoring.

 • Project risk assessment and relevant SWMS/JSAs outline method for ensuring continuous monitoring of atmosphere.

 • Monitoring records and logs.

 • Testing instruments are capable of continuous monitoring.

 • Where relevant permit records.

 • Appropriate PPE is being used by workers to minimise the exposure to atmospheric contaminates in accordance with the SWMS/JSAs and relevant legislation.

 • Documented process/procedure (or similar document) that identifies a process for selection, maintenance and use of PPE used to prevent exposure to atmospheric contaminants.

 • Respiratory protection is suitable to protect against target contaminants and minimise exposure to below workplace exposure standards.

 • SWMS/JSAs define specific PPE requirements and are consistent with specified requirements.

 • Other hazard related activities.
