    EXPLANATIONS

    SAFETY CRITICAL DEFECTS
    BRAKES: The vehicle should hold if you leave hand brake engaged and attempt to drive forward gently. This is a quick check to confirm it is holding. Once underway within the first 10 metres ensure there is no one behind you and apply foot brake to confirm vehicle stops and there is no metal type noises and that the pedal feels normal. Vehicle not pulling to left or right.

    STEERING: Prior to getting into vehicle, check wheel nut indicators are facing the same direction (if fitted). Once in vehicle move steering wheel from side to side to check that things appear normal and no excessive play.

    SEAT BELTS AND SEATING: Check that belt clips in and stays clipped in, check for frayed edges on seat belts and check that drivers seat is not damaged and allowing protrusion of sharp edges or springs etc. Seat belt, tell tale not shock loaded or protruding from bottom attachment point.

    TYRES: Check tyres for wear, look for tyre wear indicators as a guide, also visual inspection of tyres including wheel nut indicators.


    ALL OTHER DEFECTS
    UNDER BONNET: Visual on all mentioned fluid levels and visual on belts looking for cracks and frayed edges.

    LIGHTS: Are they all clean and working, are the elevated tail lights visible above the load, is the flashing light working and clean, does it have 360 degree visibility.

    SAFETY EQUIPMENT (For what first aid kit is required, refer to BMA road going vehicle standard): Is the reversing alarm working. does the horn work, check first aid kit to ensure it is intact, normally a fair indicator its contents are all there. Vehicle ID numbers and yellow stripping are in good condition and clearly legible. Fire extinguisher; The tag has to be checked and confirmed that it is within the las six months, the indicator has to be checked to confirm it is still in the green zone (no matter what the inspection date is, if it is not in the green zone it is not operational). Safety triangles should be checked to ensure they have not deteriorated in the box and are still serviceable. Flag: is the flag available and still intact, is the reflective material still attached to the flag, is the reflective material still reflective. Is the flag height within the requirements of 3.4 to 4.2 metres from the ground? Wheel chocks: Check that two are available and that they are in good condition and are secure.

    GLASS: Windscreen: Are there any chips or cracks in the wiper blade area of the windscreen impeding driver. Windows: Are all windows intact without cracks etc. Mirrors: Are there at least two means of rear vision, check that there are no cracked or broken mirrors. Wipers: Check operation of washers and wipers, check that the wiper blades are intact and do not have any loose pieces of rubber.

    TWO WAY: Check two way is operational. If hand held is required, ensure risk assessment is carried.

Vehicle Inspection Check

  • SAFETY CRITICAL ITEMS:

  • 1. Brakes: Check hand and foot operation. If applicable ABS lights go out when engine is started.

  • 2. Steering: Check for excessive play / wheel nut indicators facing in same direction if fitter.

  • 3. Seat Belts/Seating: Check if belts are operational. SRS air bag light goes out when engine is started.

  • 4. Tyres: Check for wear, damage and visual check of tyre inflation.

  • ALL OTHER ITEMS:

  • 5. Under Bonnet: Check engine oil level, coolant level, brake fluid level, fan belts, radiator, washer tank level, fluid leaks and battery secure.

  • 6. Lights: Check operation of headlights, tail lights, indicators, and reversing lights. Ensure no dash warning lights stay on when started. If applicable, high lights and flashing lights.

  • 7. Safety Equipment: Check first aid kit (applicable level kit to where operating) seals still intact, fire extinguisher, safety triangles and wheel chocks. If applicable, ID, reverse alarm, striping and flag for condition and height. (Where applicable: speed limiter is operational).

  • 8. Glass: Check windscreen for damage, inside and outside mirrors and wiper blades condition.

  • 9. Two way: Check it is operational, as applicable.

  • 10. Sticker: EC sticker valid and emergency procedure sticker in place. If applicable, Rego label current.

  • 11. Body: Check for panel damage and missing / damaged trims.

  • 12. Instruments: Check all gauges and horn for operation.

  • 13. Cargo: Check cargo is restrained both inside and outside.

  • 14. Access & Egress: Clear and unrestricted.

  • 15. Pre Start: Review previous starts for defects & other relevant info.

  • Print and hand to Supervisor email electronic copy to Supervisor.
