General Information

  • General Information and Photos (i.e. Photo of Emergency Information)

Signage

  • Are all Satellite Accumulation Areas posted with the appropriate "Satellite Accumulation Area" sign? [UAB Policy]

  • Hazardous Waste Determination
  • Are there unlabeled, non-empty containers in the lab? A person who generates a solid waste, as defined in 335-14-2-.01(2), must make an accurate determination as to whether that waste is a hazardous waste in order to ensure wastes are properly managed according to applicable ADEM regulations. [335-14-3-.01-(2)]

  • Are empty containers marked or labeled "Empty"? EHS Recommends clearly marking empty containers as empty to avoid confusion. Also remove or mark out existing original labels and hazard signs. [EHS Best Management Practice]

Waste Management

  • Are all Satellite Accumulation Areas at or near the process generating the hazardous waste? [ADEM Admin Code R. 14-3-.01(5)(a)]

  • Is hazardous waste being stored in a secure location (i.e. not in the active work area, fume hoods or in or close to the aisle where lab personnel could inadvertently knock over containers)? [ADEM Admin Code R. 14-3-.01(5)(a)]

  • Are all containers of hazardous waste closed except when actively adding or removing waste (i.e. no funnels in openings, corks, parafilm paper, test tubes, beakers, etc.)? [ADEM Adm Code R. 335-14-03-.01(5)(a) 4.]

  • Are all containers of hazardous waste labelled with the exact words "Hazardous Waste" and applicable hazardous waste characteristics? [ADEM Adm Code R. 335-14-03-.01(5)(a)5.(i) & (ii)]

  • Are hazardous waste containers in good condition (i.e. NOT leaking, rusted, corroded, bulging, missing caps or otherwise in poor condition)? [ADEM Adm Code 335-14-03-.01(5)(a)1.]

  • Are hazardous waste containers compatible with the waste stored inside them? [ADEM Adm Code 335-14-03-.01(5)(a)2.]

  • Are incompatible wastes prohibited from being stored in the same container and segregated from each other (acids away from bases, oxidizers away from flammables, etc...)? [ADEM Adm Code 335-14-03-.01(5)(a)3.]

  • Are containers of liquid hazardous waste provided with secondary containment? [ADEM Adm Code 335-14-3-.14(2)]

  • Are hazardous wastes prohibited from being disposed in regular trash, sinks or by evaporation?

  • Is hazardous waste being transferred between Satellite Accumulation Areas?

Excessive Storage

  • Is more than 1 quart or 2.2 lbs of acutely hazardous waste (P Listed) stored in the Satellite Accumulation Area? [ADEM Adm Code R. 335-14-03-.01(5)(a)6.]

Manifest Inventory

  • Are UAB Internal Hazardous Waste Manifests attached securely to boxes that have been lab packed for pickup by EHS staff with relevant chemicals listed? [ADEM Adm Code R. 335-14-03-.01(5)(a)5.(i) & (ii)]
