INSTRUCTIONS

  • Safety interactions are a practical demonstration of managements commitment to work health & safety. This checklist is an aid to assist executive managers with observations and interactions within BRC workplaces

Management shall acquire knowledge of site specific safety requirements prior to interacting with the workforce including;

  • - General hazards and risk controls for that area of work
    - Emergency assembly points, First Aid Officers, Safety Facilitator for that work area
    - PPE requirements for that workplace - minimum standard is long sleeve shirt, long trousers, enclosed footwear and high visibility vest

The workers should be advised that you are visiting for the purpose of understanding the nature of the hazards and risks in that activity and for the purposes of promoting safety awareness.

Maximise the involvement of the worker by asking them the following questions;

  • What task are they performing today?

  • What are the safety implications of their task? ( what could go wrong?)

  • Have they been involved in any risk management prior to commencing the task? (Developing SWMS, Pre start briefings, risk assessment)

  • Who do they report to if something goes wrong?

  • Has anything previously gone wrong doing this task?

  • Do they know of a safer process to do that task?

  • Do workers understand their safety responsibilities and accountabilities? Ask them to explain and make notes.

Focus on behaviour & reinforce and acknowledge good behaviour.

When someone is working unsafely ( unsafe act) undertake the following actions;

  • Place a photo here (if applicable)

  • - Get the persons attention. Stop the activity when safe to do so.
    - Comment on what the worker was doing that you had concern with.
    - Discuss with employee the following
    - possible consequences of continued action
    - Safer ways to do the task.
    - Get the workers agreement to work safer in future.
    - Discuss other safety issues of the task.
    - Thank the worker for their commitment to safer outcomes.

When safe work is observed, interact with the worker by;

  • Place a photo here (if applicable)

  • - Start with your positive observation of what you see or saw as being particularly safe. E.g. " I liked how you held that ladder for your mate."
    - Engage the workers in conversation about the job they are doing and the safety implications involved. E.g. " Do you have to work at heights often when you do that task?" " How do you usually manage that job?"
    - Thank the worker for their continued commitment to working safely.
