Sample analysis

  • pH (measured via Litmus Strips unless otherwise stated)

  • Nitrates (ppm) (measured via coloured strips)

  • Sulphates (ppm) (as measure via coloured strips)

  • Chlorides (ppm) Measure via titration. Use 1ml of sample and 10ml of distilled water. If pH is >8.3, use 2 drops of phenolphthalein and clear with sulfuric acid. If pH is <8.3, use 4-5 drops of potassium chromate and titration with silver nitrate (yellow to brick-red). Amount of silver nitrate titrated x 1000 = chlorides ppm

  • Calcium (ppm) Measure via titration. Use 1ml of sample and 10ml of distilled water. Add 4 drops of potassium hydroxide and 1 calcium indicator tab. Titrate with titraver (purple to bright blue). Amount of titraver x 400 = calcium ppm

  • Total Hardness Measure via titration. Use 1ml of sample and 10ml of distilled water. Add 4 drops of calcium buffer and 3 drops of calcium indicator. Titrate with titraver (dark purple to dark blue). Amount of titraver x 400 = total hardness

  • Magnesium (ppm) Mg (ppm) = total hardness - calcium

  • Potassium (ppm) Measured via Horiba Potassium Meter. To be calibrated before each use.

  • Sodium (ppm)

  • Electrical Conductivity (EC in microseimens/cm). Measure via Horiba EC Meter. One-point calibration to be conducted before each use.
