Safety Requirements

General Shop Safetyshop

  • Are daily safety moments conducted in each work area?

  • Did the supervisor verify that the shop was safe to work before that start of each shift?

  • Are emergency communications instructions easily accessible for accident, medical, and fire emergencies?

  • Is a first aid kit easily accessible to employees IAW WRM-2614 requirements?

  • Are fire extinguishers, fire hoses, and pull stations free from obstruction and obstacles?

  • Are emergency exit doors incapable of locking people inside?

  • Are there PPE signs in areas that require PPE all the time (i.e. hard hat areas, hearing protection, etc.)?

  • Is PPE available where required?

  • Are there hazard signs, safety chains, cones, and other markings to notify people of known hazards?

  • Are floors, aisles, and passageways free from trip and slip hazards?

Shop Electrical Safety

  • Have exposed wires, frayed cords, and deteriorating insulation been repaired or replaced?

  • Are emergency shutoff switches free of obstruction that would impede access in an emergency?

  • Are junction boxes, receptacle boxes, switch boxes, and hot electrical fittings covered?

  • Are cords and wires kept off the floor?

  • Is wiring protected from moving equipment?

  • Are electrical systems protected from foul weather?

  • Are extension cords only used in open areas (can't be run through holes, walls, tubing, etc)?

  • Are High Voltage systems guarded and labeled "Danger: High Voltage"?

Shop Powered Tool Safety

  • Are required safety instructions posted on each shop machine?

  • Are energy sources (compressed air, electrical, etc.) for each shop machine labeled or documented?

  • Are shop machines labeled with PPE requirements for that equipment?

  • Are shop machines permanently mounted to a pedestal, table, or other surface to prevent travel during operation?

  • Are electric shop machines electrically grounded?

  • Are shop machines (table saws, drill presses, etc.) equipped with an emergency stop device?

  • Are electrical power supply cords protected from shop machine moving parts?

  • Is adequate space available around shop machines to safely manipulate material in the machine?

  • Are belts, pulleys, rotating shafts, drive chains, gears, and other moving parts guarded?

  • Are shop machine tool surfaces (saw blade, grinding wheel, drill bit, etc.) guarded as directed by the manufacturer?

  • Are powered hand tools in good condition (no frayed cords, no cracked housing, no burning smell, etc.)?

  • Are vices, clamps, and other devices available to hold small items when using powered hand tools?

  • Are tables and benches used to support powered hand tool work stable and capable of safely holding the materials being worked on?

  • Are all powered hand tools guarded as required by the manufacturer?

  • Are fans (both equipment and personal cooling) that are positioned less than 7feet above the floor guarded to prevent personnel contact with moving parts?

  • Are compressed air system relief valves checked for proper operation?

  • Are compressed air regulators in good working order?

  • Are all compressed air lines. Loses with caps, valves, regulators, or fittings that prevent uncontrolled release of pressure?

  • Are fire extinguishers that are positioned near shop machines designed for the materials for those machines (e.g. both electrical and wood in the carpentry shop)?

Shop Hand Tool Safety

  • Are tools and equipment in good condition?

  • Have mushroomed heads been reconditioned?

  • Have cracked or broken hammer handles been replaced?

  • Have worn or broken tool handles been replaced?

  • Have worn or broken wrenches been replaced?

  • Has compressed air used for cleaning been reduced to 30 psi?

  • Are compressed air lines used for cleaning labeled with air pressure (in psi)?

  • Are portable ladders and step stools inspected before use?

  • Have defective ladders been tagged out and removed from serviceable tool storage areas?

  • Do ladders extend at least 3.5 feet above the top of landing?

  • Are metal ladders labeled "Do not use for electrical equipment"?

Materials Management/MHE Safety

  • Are forklifts and MHE inspected prior to use?

  • Is there safe clearance for forklift access where MHE is required?

  • Is forklift battery charging only performed in well ventilated, designated areas?

  • Is forklift refueling only done in well ventilated areas?

  • Are forks left down when the forklift is unattended?

  • Are vehicles shut off prior to loading?

  • Are safety showers and eye wash stations available where employees may be exposed to hazardous chemicals?

  • Are "No Smoking" signs posted in areas where flammable or combustible materials are stored?

  • Is smoking prohibited within 50ft of areas where flammable or combustible materials are used, handled, or stored?

  • Are explosion proof devices used in flammable materials storage areas?

  • Are flammable and combustible materials containers (tanks, cans, drums, etc.) grounded and bonded when transferring materials?

  • Are all flammable and combustible materials containers, lids, fittings, piping, etc. vapor tight?

  • Are materials hazard signs posted in hazardous materials storage areas (including lockers)?

  • Are MSDS's available where hazardous chemicals are used or stored?

  • Are hazardous materials protected from moving equipment, heat, and incompatible materials?

  • Are compressed gas cylinders kept away from heat sources?

  • Are gas cylinders protected from moving equipment and falling objects?

  • Are in use gas cylinders at least 20ft from flammable or combustible sources?

  • Are gas cylinder caps in place except when in use?

  • Are gas cylinders chained, or otherwise protected from tipping or falling?
